This week, top Edmonton Oilers goaltending prospect Samuel Jonsson was named to the ECHL All-Star Game.
Jonsson is currently in his first season with the Oilersâ ECHL affiliate, the Fort Wayne Komets. The 22-year-oldâs ECHL career got off to a dominant start this season, posting three shutouts through his first four games in the league and named ECHL Goaltender of the Week in early November. Things have now evened out slightly with a 5-3-2 record through 10 games played, currently holding a 2.55 GAA and an .896 SV%. The GĂ€vle, Sweden nativeâs three shutouts still have him tied for the league lead, with the Komets currently fifth in the Western Conference.
At the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Jonsson was selected in the fifth round by the Edmonton Oilers while playing junior hockey in his home country of Sweden. Before coming to North America this season, he played two seasons of professional hockey in HockeyAllsvenskan, the second-highest tier league in Sweden behind the Swedish Hockey League. Playing last year with BIK Karlskoga, he finished the season with a 17-6 record, a 1.88 GAA, and a .922 SV%, boasting six shutouts.
In Oilersnationâs Summer 2025 prospect countdown, Jonsson came in at No. 3. The highest goalie named on the list, he was behind only Matt Savoie and Isaac Howard overallâtwo players who have now both seen considerable NHL action. On Jonsson, Oilersnationâs Cam Lewis wrote that thereâs lots to like about the young prospect, but itâll still be a while before thereâs any chance of seeing him in Edmonton:
Given his previous success in Swedenâs J20 and Allsvenskan levels, thereâs reason to be excited about Jonssonâs potential as a long-term goalie option for the Oilers. Of course, itâs important to remember that the 21-year-old hasnât even made an appearance in Swedenâs top professional league. Even with the uncertainty in Edmontonâs net, Jonsson will need to put in a significant body of work in the AHL before heâs in the NHL conversation.
The ECHL All-Star Classic takes place on January 19th at 5 pm MT from Credit Union of Texas Event Center. According to the league, the team is determined based on âa vote of coaches, team captains, media relations directors, broadcasters, and members of the media.â
