With the 158th overall pick, the Edmonton Oilers used their fifth-round selection to grab goaltender, Samuel Jonsson, from Brynas Jr. from the Swedish junior league.

With only their second pick at the NHL Entry Draft, the Oilers looked to bolster their goaltending depth by selecting Samuel Jonsson from Brynas Jr at 158th overall. Listed at 6’4″ and 201 pounds, Jonsson is a massive human being between the pipes and while his stats in the Swedish junior league (9-20-0) leave something to be desired, we all know how drafting goalies can be voodoo to say the least and it’s going to take some time to see how right or wrong the scouts were. A long-term project to be sure, the Oilers will give Jonsson plenty of time to keep working on his craft before even considering a move that brings him over to North America. In 2022-23, Jonsson could make the leap to Sweden’s top league where he would face stiffer competition and possibly give us a better idea of what kind of player he may be down the line.

Seeing as the Oilers are incredibly shallow in goaltending prospects, I wasn’t at all surprised to see them take a goalie with one of their later round picks. We all know that goaltending prospects take years to arrive at the NHL level — if ever — and while a 3.25 GAA and .833 save% aren’t the prettiest numbers you’ll ever see, it’s clear that the Oilers’ scouts saw something in the player that made this pick worthwhile. What did they see? Only time will tell. Even putting this article together proved to be difficult as there is not a whole lot about Jonsson listed anywhere on the Internet, and while scouting reports don’t always paint a full picture, the lack of information about our new goalie friend has turned him into an international man of mystery.

In 31 games played with the Brynas Jr, Jonsson posted a 9-20-0 record to go along with a 3.25 GAA and a .883 save%.
