As the Edmonton Oilers staff and players met with the media Saturday morning at Rogers Place, more details were revealed about some of the injuries that plagued this team.
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said in a postgame press conference after their Game 6 loss to the Anaheim Ducks that multiple players had played through fractures, and Saturday, shared that two who did were Connor McDavid and Jason Dickinson.
“Both Connor and Dickinson had fractures in the foot/ankle area. I have a lot and admiration for their willingness to battle through and get on the ice,” Knoblauch said.
Dickinson had missed the final three games of the regular season after blocking a shot against the San Jose Sharks on April 8. While he was able to dress for Game 1, having a huge two-goal performance in his Oilers playoff debut, the centre would miss Games 2 and 3. He played in Games 5 and 6, however, but it was clear he was far from 100 per cent. Dickinson enters the summer as an unrestricted free agent.
McDavid, meanwhile, got tied up with Mattias Ekholm during Game 2 of the series at Rogers Place. McDavid said after the game he was fine, having “just rolled” his ankle, but it was clear there was something more nefarious. The Oilers captain didn’t seem to have the same bursts of speed, nor the confidence and comfortability that he usually does. He had moments late in the series where he would turn on the jets, like late in Game 4, he was clearly hobbled. McDavid notched a goal and six points in six games, taking 20 shots on goal.
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman said Saturday nobody is expected to undergo surgery, and all should be ready for the start of next season.
Now, bounced out of the first round by the Ducks, the Oilers will have a long summer to get healthy and prepare for next season when the first year of McDavid’s two-year contract extension begins.
