Former Edmonton Oilers superstar goaltender Grant Fuhr congratulated Stuart Skinner’s outstanding record-breaking consecutive win streak during Saturday’s Oilers game against the Nashville Predators.
In a video message shown after a commercial break, Fuhr congratulated Skinner for breaking the record he set back in the 1985-86 season while playing with the club. He won 10 straight games, setting the all-time franchise record.
“I just wanted to say congratulations on the streak,” Fuhr said. “I’m glad to see that you’re the one that broke it. You’re an awesome person, and I look forward to watching [the Oilers] the rest of the year and making a great run at the cup.”
Like Fuhr, Skinner etched himself into Oilers history on Tuesday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets when the Oilers secured a 4-1 victory with Skinner in their crease for his 11th straight win.
“It means a lot,” said Skinner following the win. “I was feeling a lot of emotions, especially going on the ice as the first star there, because it’s pretty cool being able to break a record from one of the best goalies to ever live, a guy that I look up to, a guy that I’ve talked to, and he’s just one of the best.”
Fuhr was the eighth overall selection by the Oilers in the 1981 NHL draft. Throughout Fuhr’s 10 seasons with the Oilers, his franchise-record win streak was just one of a handful of accomplishments Fuhr achieved with the club. Fuhr holds five Stanley Cup rings (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990) as well as a Vezina Trophy (1987-88) and a William M. Jennings Trophy (1993-94). Alongside his awards and Championships, he also holds a number of records, including most career points by a goaltender, most games played in a single season by a goaltender, and more.
The all-time NHL record is 14 consecutive games tied between former Boston Bruins goaltender Tiny Thompson (1929-30), former Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Tom Barrasso (1992-93), former Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller (2013-14), and most recently Florida Panthers Sergei Bobrovsky who had 14 straight wins in 2016-17 while with the Blue Jackets.
Although Skinner was unaware he even tied Fuhr’s record against the Calgary Flames on January 20th, he most likely isn’t thinking of the all-time record and just doing what he does best, taking things game by game.
