When you become one of the highest-paid hockey players of all time, it’s only a matter of time before your name pops up on Jeopardy!

That was the case for Leon Draisaitl on Tuesday night. A contestant selected “Canadian Girlfriends” for $600, and host Ken Jennings read: “Leon Draisaitl stars for this northernmost NHL team, but went to warmer Spain to propose to Celeste Desjardins.”

The clip made its way to r/hockey on Reddit, and only one contestant rang in, responding, “Who are the Winnipeg Jets?” Not the worst guess, given Winnipeg’s well-known winters and references to the city on The Simpsons, but the correct response was “What are the Edmonton Oilers?” Edmonton is the NHL’s northernmost franchise.

Hockey diehards might scoff, but Jeopardy! rewards breadth of knowledge over niche depth. Not everyone follows the NHL or the sport of hockey, and this was as much a Canada clue as a hockey one. Personally speaking, that would probably be the only question I could get correct if I were on the show.

For context, Draisaitl proposed to his partner, Canadian actress Celeste Desjardins, on July 11, 2024. The couple married in Europe this summer. Desjardins, from Sudbury, Ontario, has appeared in a range of projects from holiday films to the Taken TV series.

Draisaitl enters 2025-26 in the first year of his eight-year, $112 million extension signed in September 2024, a $14 million AAV that set the league’s high-water mark at the time. He’s coming off an excellent 2024-25 season with 52 goals and 106 points, leading the team in both categories while finishing second in Hart Trophy voting.
