The Edmonton Oilers will be carrying salary cap overages into the following year for the third straight season.
This, according to PuckPedia, who released the league-wide overage numbers Friday morning, with the Oilers being one of eight teams confirmed to be impacted. Edmonton will carry just $250,000 in overages, according to PuckPedia.
Edmonton’s impact comes with the team finishing the season while being over the salary cap and utilizing the Long-Term Injured Reserve, and Matt Savoie earned a $250,000 “A” bonus for hitting an ice-time threshold.
The Oilers have frequently been impacted by overages in recent years. After the 2019-20 season, the team had $676,000 in overages that they split over the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. After 2020-21, they had $328,000 in overages, but were heavily impacted after the 2023-24 season, carrying forth a staggering $3.55 million in overages. The majority of those overages were due to a 10-game played bonus for Connor Brown, while Corey Perry received $100,000 in bonus’ for the Oilers reaching the Western Conference Final and Stanley Cup Final.
But heading into this season, the Oilers had the second fewest overages of 11 teams carrying them, with just $250,000 impacting their cap. Those all came, once again, from Perry, who earned $100,000 in regular season performance bonuses, and another $150,000 for the Oilers making a deep run.
Savoie’s bonus is an easy pill for the team to swallow given the breakout rookie season he had, racking up 18 goals and 37 points in 82 games. Much of his damage was done in the second half of the season, however.
Heading into the Olympic break, he had nine goals and 18 points in 58 games, averaging 13:50 in ice-time, while after the break, he added another nine goals and 19 points in 24 games, averaging 17:04 per night. Moved up the lineup in the wake of Leon Draisaitl’s injury, Savoie seized the moment and after notching his first career hat trick Thursday night, appears ready to make an impact in his first NHL playoffs.
