Kyle Turris’ time in Edmonton is all but over. Signed to a two-year deal ahead of the 2020-21 season, Turris only played in 50 games over the contract with injuries forcing him out of the lineup.

He was brought in for some veteran depth in the lineup after having his contract bought out by the Nashville Predators but he never really made an impact on the ice. He scored just three goals and nine points.

But the impact Turris had was felt off the ice.

When Duncan Keith retired at the end of this season, he specifically named Turris as one of the players who made his time in Edmonton special. It was a bad back for Turris that kept him out of the lineups, but it’s clear there was still value to the team with his veteran presence.

There’s nothing there for Turris analytically. We’re dealing with a small sample size of just 23 games this year with all his points coming at 5×5, but his numbers were bad.

He numbers paled in comparison to that of his teammates and his isolated impacts painted a stark picture. He provided offence at a seven percent rate below league average and defence at a nine percent rate below league average. The stuff just isn’t there anymore for him.

The Oilers didn’t, and won’t be re-signing Kyle Turris, and I have a hard time imagining anyone else taking a risk on the 32-year-old. He was dealing with back issues and those are things that can really hurt guys in their 30’s in the NHL.

The situation is almost reminiscent of when the Oilers brought back Kyle Brodziak in 2018-19. While he did give the Oilers one year, he was forced out of the game afterwards due to back problems

If this is in fact the end of the road for Turris, I’d wish him nothing but the best for a guy who had a solid 776 game NHL career.
