Amid the busy news day in Alberta’s provincial capital, the Edmonton Oilers announced that the team has recalled defenceman Riley Stillman from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

This is Stillman’s first call-up of the season with Edmonton, as he was placed on waivers just ahead of the 2025-26 season getting underway. He has played rather well with the Condors thus far. In 22 games, the Peterborough, Ont. native has two goals and five assists for seven points, well ahead of his point production over his past few seasons in the AHL.

Stillman appeared in just five games with the Hurricanes last season, the fewest appearances he’s made during an NHL season since the 2018-19 campaign, when he made his big-league debut with the Florida Panthers. The Cats were the team that took him in the fourth round, 114th overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft.

The former Chicago Blackhawk played the final two games of the regular season for the Hurricanes prior to the postseason.

The 27-year-old was the first player the Oilers signed when free agency opened on July 1, inking the former Carolina Hurricanes rearguard to a two-year, two-way contract. The deal carries an NHL AAV of $775,000, with a minor-league salary of $475,000.

In 163 NHL regular-season games, Stillman has scored four goals and 22 assists for 26 points. He appeared in three games during the 2020 postseason with the Panthers.

The move comes on the same day as the Oilers made a couple of big splashes on the trade market. Along with acquiring defender Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators, Edmonton traded goaltender Stuart Skinner, defender Brett Kulak and a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft to the Pittsburgh Penguins for netminder Tristan Jarry and forward Samuel Poulin.

Prior to the team’s 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, the Oilers called up forward Max Jones from Bakersfield, placing defenceman Jake Walman on long-term injured reserve.

The Oilers (14-11-6) sit fourth in the Pacific Division, holding the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. They are set to visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
