The Stuart Skinner era in Edmonton is over.
The Edmonton Oilers traded the goaltender to the Pittsburgh Penguins alongside Brett Kulak and a second-round pick in the 2029 draft in exchange for goaltender Tristan Jarry, and forward Samuel Poulin.
The deal came as somewhat of a surprise Friday morning, as recent reports suggested the Oilers were looking to pair Skinner and Jarry together in the Edmonton crease. But Skinner’s name has been in trade rumours for months, dating back to early November.
Drafted by the Oilers in the third round of the 2017 draft, Skinner has appeared in 197 regular season games for the team, posting a 109-62-18 record, a .904 save percentage and a 2.74 goals against average. He’s helped the team get to two straight Stanley Cup finals, appearing in 50 playoff games over the past three seasons, posting a 26-22 record, a .893 save percentage and a 2.88 goals against average.
But Skinner’s best seasons in Edmonton came in his first two years with the team. Thrust into the starting role in 2022-23, in that season and the 2023-24 campaign, he would post a .909 save percentage and a 2.68 goals against average with a 61 percent quality start percentage. In the last two seasons, however, those numbers dipped to a .894 save percentage and a 2.82 goals against average, with just a 47.9 percent quality start percentage.
Jarry, meanwhile, has seen a resurgence in the crease this season a year after the worst of his career. In 36 games last season, he posted a .892 save percentage and a 3.12 goals against average with just a 48.6 percent quality start percentage — all career low numbers. He found himself on waivers at one point and playing NHL games, but the 30-year-old has rebounded well this season, posting a 9-3-1, a .909 save percentage and a 2.66 goals against average for the Penguins.
Kulak, 31, has appeared in 295 games for the Oilers over the past five seasons, scoring 15 goals and 71 points, not missing a single game since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a second-round pick and prospect William Lagesson.
Poulin, 24, was drafted by the Penguins in the first round of the 2019 draft, but has struggled to crack the NHL lineup, playing just 15 games over the past four seasons. He’s appeared in 207 AHL games with the Penguins’ affiliate, scoring 64 goals and 135 points.
The Oilers made another trade on Friday, sending a third-round pick to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenceman Spencer Stastney. The 25-year-old left shot defenceman was drafted by the Predators in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, and has appeared in 81 games over the last four seasons, scoring three goals and 18 points.
He’s set a career high in games played this season, drawing in for 30 games with the Predators, scoring one goal and nine points. With him on the ice at five-on-five, the Predators controlled 57.8 percent of the shot attempt share, 55.3 percent of the expected goal share and 53 percent of the high-danger scoring chance share, according to Natural Stat Trick.
Stastney, according to Hockey Viz, has driven offence at a three percent rate above league average and defence at a two percent rate below league average, with his overall contributions equating to being between a low-end first pairing defenceman, and a high-end second pairing defenceman.
