Did the Edmonton Oilers ever need that win?
On Tuesday evening, the Oilers returned home to host the surging Utah Mammoth, defeating them 6-3 to end the Mammoth’s seven-game winning streak. Let’s take a look at what went on in this one!
Things didn’t start great for the Oilers. Midway through the first period, the Mammoth took a 1-0 lead thanks to a turnover at the Oilers’ blue line. Logan Cooley buried it to take the lead. In the final two-and-a-half minutes, the Mammoth extended their lead to two, as a failed dump-in gave J.J. Peterka an opportunity, with the German snapping it past Stuart Skinner.
The Oilers came out and played a lot better in the second period. Just 22 seconds into the middle frame, Mattias Ekholm blasted it past the Mammoth netminder to cut the lead in half.
Less than three minutes later, the Oilers tied the game as the puck found its way to the front of the net, with Isaac Howard left all alone in front of the Mammoth’s goalie. He made no mistake in scoring his second career goal.
The Mammoth retook the lead midway through the second, but it was all the Oilers from there. With just under six and a half minutes left in the second, the Oilers had a brief cycle in the zone, with Jake Walman’s shot deflecting off the netminder’s pads to Leon Draisaitl, who tapped in his eighth of the season.
It took less than a minute to give the Oilers the game-winning goal. Ekholm’s shot from the point was deflected in front of the net, landing on the stick of a creeping Ty Emberson, who buried it for his first of the season.
The Oilers didn’t have a five-goal period in 2024-25, but they got one in this game, as Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a pretty passing play, leading to McDavid’s second of the season. McDavid added his second of the game into the empty net.

Takeaways…

That was the Oilers’ most complete game of the season. The Oilers finished with 11 high-danger scoring chances while giving up eight to the Mammoth. Moreover, the Oilers outshot the Mammoth 27 to 23; it was just a good all-around game for the offence.
The last time the Oilers’ offence exploded for five goals in a single period was towards the end of the 2023-24 season, when they scored five goals in the second period in a 9-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Apr. 15, 2024. They had scored four goals in the previous period against the Sharks.
That said, the big difference between that game and Tuesday’s game is that the Mammoth are no pushovers. Coming into this game, the team from Salt Lake City were 8-2-0 on the season, winning their last seven games. The Oilers got a massive win against a playoff team.
Evan Bouchard is now sitting on a five-game point streak, picking up three assists in this one. Over those five games, he has a goal and seven points. Mattias Ekholm had his best game of the season, scoring his first goal of the season and picking up an assist. Jake Walman’s return has been huge for the Oilers, as he picked up two assists in this game.
Tuesday’s game was also Connor McDavid’s best game of the season, as he scored twice. Adam Henrique picked up two assists, while Leon Draisaitl had a goal and an assist. It was nice to see Isaac Howard back on the board, scoring his second of the season in just over nine minutes of ice time.
The Oilers maintained the same lines throughout the game, and it was beneficial. McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins have always had chemistry, but adding Andrew Mangiapane gives them a legitimate winger. Jack Roslovic has looked strong recently, and he, alongside Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin, has emerged as a solid line.
Next up for the Oilers is a home game against the New York Rangers on Thursday at 7:00 PM MT. They’ll look to pick up their third two-game win streak of the season.
