The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Mathieu Joseph to a one-year, $1 million contract, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported.
Joseph, 29, spent last season splitting time between the St. Louis Blues, where he scored two goals and 11 points in 39 games, and the Los Angeles Kings, where he scored no points in 12 games.
Drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, Joseph has appeared in 471 NHL games over his career, scoring 61 goals and 160 points between time with the Lightning, Ottawa Senators, Blues, and Kings.
This contract has the fingerprints of the Oilers’ analytics department, as Joseph has been a strong driver of play. This past season, despite driving offence at a six per cent rate below league average, he drove defence at a 12 per cent rate above league average, and penalty kill play at a six per cent rate above league average, according to HockeyViz. Throughout his career, Joseph has driven play at the rate of between a low-end second-line player, and an average first line player, with his most recent season between second- and third-line contributions.
The signing of Joseph comes after a flurry of other Oilers moves, headlined by trades to acquire goaltender Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres, and Darnell Nurse being traded to the San Jose Sharks for Shakir Mukhamadullin and defensive prospect Zack Sharp.
The Oilers signed defenceman Ryan Shea to a five-year, $4 million AAV contract, forward Eduards Tralmaks to a one-year, $850,000 contract, and also re-signed winger Kasperi Kapanen to a one-year, $2.6 million contract.
After signing Joseph, the Oilers have $8.253 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia, with restricted free agents Colton Dach, Spencer Stastney, and Mukhamadullin to sign.
