One Edmonton Oilers prospect will get an opportunity to impress Hockey Canada brass at an upcoming summer tournament.

Tommy Lafrenière was one of 18 forwards selected to Team Canada for the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase from July 26 to Aug. 1 in Windsor, Ont.

The third-round pick taken by the Oilers 83rd overall in the 2025 NHL Draft put up healthy offensive numbers with the Kamloops Blazers in 2025-26. He scored 41 goals and 77 points in 67 games last season, which was third in team scoring, and represented a 21-point increase from the previous year.

As his junior season finished, Lafrenière signed an amateur tryout with William Nicholl so he could suit up with the Bakersfield Condors. He showed off that quick release, which made him a top goal-scorer last season, notching one goal and an assist in his first five pro games.

The 19-year-old is committed to Western Michigan for the 2026-27 season as more major junior players graduate to the NCAA with the change in eligibility rules. He finishes his WHL career with 67 goals and 133 points in 140 games with the Blazers.

A total of 32 players comprise Canada’s roster for the tournament, which will face Sweden, Finland, and two different teams from the United States.

Lafrenière will face two fellow Oilers prospects invited to the American teams: defenceman Asher Barnett and recently selected goaltender Ryan Cameron.

This is a stepping stone along the path to being chosen for Team Canada’s World Junior team, with the tournament hosted in Edmonton and Red Deer in 2026-27. Canada features some recent top draft choices like Carson Carels and Keaton Verhoeff. Misha Donskov will coach after being an assistant on last year’s team.

Canada will play in Group A, along with Czechia, Latvia, Norway and Switzerland, with preliminary-round games at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Group B consists of Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden and the United States, with preliminary-round games at Marchant Crane Centrium in Red Deer.
