Two Edmonton Oilers prospects have received invitations to be among the best junior players in the United States.
USA Hockey invited 47 players to the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase from July 26 to August 1 in Windsor, Ont. Defenceman Asher Barnett and goaltender Ryan Cameron will be in the mix for their national program as they work towards the World Junior team.
Both players were in Edmonton last week for the Oilers Development Camp, which ran from Tuesday until Thursday.
Barnett was a fifth-round draft choice of the Oilers in 2025 and played last season at the University of Michigan. It was a true freshman season for the 18-year-old blueliner, scoring five goals and 18 points, while playing against BIG-10 competition.
He was selected for the USA’s World Junior team last year and will have a great chance to come back and expand his role. The Wilmette, Illinois native has been a staple of the program throughout his teen years.
As a member of the US National Development Team, he’s been a captain of the USA’s U18 team and played at the World U17s. It’s anticipated that Barnett will wear an “A” for the Michigan Wolverines next season.
Cameron just became an Oiler product this past weekend at the NHL Draft. He was Edmonton’s last draft choice in the seventh round, 212th overall.
The 18-year-old netminder has been involved in the national team program in multiple tournaments. He played four games at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup in 2024 and got into one game at last year’s World Junior A Challenge.
“We tracked him all last year. It started in the Hlinka event,” said Rick Pracey, Oilers director of scouting, during a media debrief on Saturday. Pracey hinted that the Oilers’ organization expected an invite, as Cameron’s pedigree within USA Hockey continues to grow.
All draft choices are at development camp. Cameron spoke with Oilers TV’s Tony Brar upon his arrival on Monday.
This Summer Showcase will have teams from Canada, Finland, and Sweden and will feature 10 games over the course of the week in a non-tournament format. It’s all in the lead-up to the 2027 World Junior Championships in Edmonton and Red Deer.
