It’s day two of training camp for the Edmonton Oilers, and there have already been some tense moments thanks to a scrimmage.

While day one on Thursday brought forth some colourful quotes and high-intensity skates, the vibe shifted when Oilers captain Connor McDavid crashed hard into the net. It happened when McDavid, as he does so often, used his speed to cut through the opposing side’s defence.

And as he drove with the puck toward the net with his shoulder down and the puck on his backhand, newcomer defenceman Shakir Mukhamadullin put his stick into McDavid’s lower back, sending him crashing hard into the post, as a video shared by Sportsnet’s Gene Principe showed.

McDavid popped up and was seen holding his arm, but would score on a subsequent penalty shot and would stay on the ice for the remainder of the skate. Exhale, Oil Country.

While it’s encouraging to see Mukhamadullin not being fearful of what’s in front of him, there’s a time and place, of course, and laying the lumber on a player like McDavid will surely earn him such a reminder. Thankfully, as Lowetide pointed out, Mukhamadullin didn’t “Kirill Tulupov” McDavid as the Russian camp invite did to then-Oilers winger Ben Eager, laying a heavy hit in the 2011 Joey Moss Cup that left Eager with a concussion.

No worse for wear, McDavid was, and the Oilers will be hoping for the same for centre Jason Dickinson, as he left the skate with an apparent injury. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug noted that Dickinson would soon return and take part in a couple of drills.

When Oilers head coach Mike Babcock was asked if there was any concern about Dickinson leaving the skate, he kept his cards close. At least at first.

“You saw that too, hey?” he said. “How would I say this… is when something goes wrong, someone else gets a chance. We’re trying to create depth anyway, so who’s getting that chance?”

Okay, but that doesn’t answer the question.

“Just to follow up based on your answer, is Dickinson potentially missing time?” asked Rishaug.

“I don’t think so,” said Babcock. “We knew he wasn’t scrimmaging today. We knew that before. We knew Ekholm wasn’t scrimmaging today, we’re just monitoring that.”

Dickinson, as Babcock mentioned, didn’t take part in the scrimmage, with his spot filled by Owen Michaels, The Athletic’s Janson Duench noted.

The Oilers are preparing to kick off their pre-season schedule on Saturday night, as they host the Winnipeg Jets.
