One of the Edmonton Oilers’ top goaltending prospects is coming to North America, as Eemil Vinni has signed a one-year, AHL contract with the Bakersfield Condors.

Vinni, 20, was selected by the Oilers in the second round of the 2024 draft, and his journey into the AHL will be his first experience on the smaller ice. He started last season with JoKP in Finland’s Mestis league, where across 17 games, he had a 8-5-4 record, posting a .884 save percentage, and a 2.99 goals-against average.

By February, however, he was loaned to Mestis’ Ketterä, where he played four games, posting a 2-2-1 record, a .951 save percentage and a 1.23 goals-against average.

Vinni was named the 18th-best prospect in the Oilers organization Monday by our own prospect guru Spencer Pomoty, highlighting his athleticism and skating ability.

There wasn’t much I found wrong with Vinni’s game.
The raw athleticism is still there, and he continues to improve on his rebound control as well as his tracking of the puck. I haven’t really seen a “bad” goal against in my viewings, but I also found his occasional over-aggressiveness could take himself out of the play if an extra pass were to happen.
This was always a long-term bet with Vinni and it usually is with goalies. Missing a good chunk of the 2024-25 season doesn’t help with his development, but this year appears to be a solid step in the right direction, especially after the move to Ketterä.
What lies ahead is a big year for the Finnish goalie: how can Vinni start the year with a full offseason of training? Can he continue to bring his excellent end-of-season form into the 2026-27 season?
Eemil Vinni doesn’t have to sign a contract until June 2028, but if he can earn that contract, I like his tools. Maybe in the early 2030s he can work his way into some NHL action.

It’s safe to say Vinni coming to North America so soon is nothing short of a surprise. Getting Vinni overseas is a win, and the team clearly thinks highly of him, having used a second-round selection on him.
