Connor McDavid may have won the award for Best NHL Player at the 2024 ESPY Awards on Thursday night, but that doesn’t mean he or the Edmonton Oilers were free from their fair share of ribbing during the ceremony.
ESPYs host Nikki Glaser wasted little time in taking a few shots at the Oilers and their captain during her monologue at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, earning herself a few glares from Oilers forward Evander Kane in the audience.
“What I’m trying to say is that nothing will stand in the way of these incredible athletes and their pursuit of greatness. I mean, except the Florida Panthers.” Glaser joked. “Boy, Connor, that must have hurt to lose a game of ice hockey to a place that doesn’t even have ice.”
“For now, the only Stanley Cup Connor will get to hold is the one his wife asked him to grab out of the cabinet,” Glaser added.

McDavid and the Oilers came within one game of beating the Panthers in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, battling back from a 3-0 series deficit before falling by a 2-1 score in the deciding Game 7 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.
Despite being held without a point in each of the final two games of the series against the Panthers, McDavid was named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The 27-year-old forward led all NHL players with 34 assists and 42 points in 25 playoff contests this past spring.
McDavid has now been named the winner of the Best NHL Player ESPY three years in a row. He also finished third place in voting for the Hart Memorial Trophy this year and was named to the NHL’s end-of-season Second All-Star Team.
The Oilers originally selected McDavid with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. The 2024-25 season will be his 10th in the NHL, and despite taking home countless individual awards during his Hall of Fame career, he still has his eyes set on finally winning the biggest prize of all. But until he does … the jokes will likely keep coming.
