Former Edmonton Oilers forward Warren Foegele revealed that his ex-teammates gave him a hard time over the summer after he chose to sign with their division rival the Los Angeles Kings.
“I think it was more my Oiler teammates giving me a harder time than the Kings,” he said to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas in a sit-down interview for 32 Thoughts: The Podcast. “It was kind of funny when I signed with LA on July 1st, I had a couple of them come over up in Muskoka.
“I had Bouchard and Ryan McLeod come over. My neighbour up there is Adam Henrique, so then he came over. And then they were like, ‘You had to choose the Kings out of anyone?’ It was pretty funny, but they obviously understand it’s a business and some funny laughs that night.”
Foegele was one of the more notable players the Oilers lost in free agency this past offseason after their dramatic run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. While players come and go every season, it is not often that a player leaves one team to sign with a division rival, much less one that has lost three consecutive series to Edmonton in the first round. But that is exactly what happened here with Foegele cashing in on his career year to move to Los Angeles.
His former teammates in Bouchard, McLeod, and Henrique certainly understood that his decision to sign with the Kings was nothing personal, but one can only imagine how much they were ripping him for choosing to sign with them of all teams.
The Oilers and Kings are both off to sluggish starts to their respective seasons, with Edmonton sitting at 1-3-0 while Los Angeles is at 1-1-2 after getting demolished by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. As for Foegele, he has gone scoreless in his first four games, donning the Black and Silver.
