<p>The Oilers started to gain momentum in the second half of the first period and broke through with just under six minutes left in the frame. Leon Draisaitl carried the puck down low, threw it out front, and Evander Kane managed to jam it home.</p>

<p>Edmonton made their lead 2-0 just over one minute later. Connor McDavid brought the puck behind Washington&#8217;s net and tried the centre a pass into the slot. The puck bounced off of goaltender Charlie Lindgren and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins batted it out of the air and into the net.</p>
