The Oilers started to gain momentum in the second half of the first period and broke through with just under six minutes left in the frame. Leon Draisaitl carried the puck down low, threw it out front, and Evander Kane managed to jam it home.
Edmonton made their lead 2-0 just over one minute later. Connor McDavid brought the puck behind Washington’s net and tried the centre a pass into the slot. The puck bounced off of goaltender Charlie Lindgren and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins batted it out of the air and into the net.

Edmonton’s power play took over in the second period and the Oilers kicked the floodgates open. Moments after Tom Wilson was sent to the penalty box for roughing, Evan Bouchard wired home a slapshot from the point to make the score 3-0.

John Carlson took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after that goal from Bouchard so the Oilers went on another power play. This time, it was Leon Draisaitl who capitalized and put Edmonton up by a score of 4-0.
What a play by McDavid and Draisaitl. The power play is rolling today. 4-0 Oilers.
Late in the second period with Nic Dowd in the penalty box for flipping the puck over the glass, Draisaitl scored again to extend Edmonton’s lead to 5-0.
Now THIS is the power play we know and love. 5-0 Oilers.
The Oilers closed the door in the third period to seal the 5-0 win. Stuart Skinner stopped all 25 shots that Washington threw at him for Edmonton’s first shutout of the season.
