The garage sale is open for business. Final Score: 4-1 Senators
The last time the Oilers played the Senators I was on a bus headed down to Jasper for the #NationSkiTrip. We had 45 screaming citizens pumped full of alcohol who were charged up about a big win. People were actually talking about whether or not the Oilers could make a run at the playoffs. THE PLAYOFFS?! Do you remember it? You should. It just over two weeks ago. Anyway, the Oilers have played so much shitacular hockey since that win in Ottawa that we’ve transitioned from playoff potential to draft lottery dreaming (as per tradition). This is our life to live.
Lost decades aside, we had a game to watch where we would find out whether the Ottawa Senators would avenge the ass kicking they suffered at the hands of the Oilers only a fortnight ago. It would be a battle for the ages! *sigh* The Sens have been mediocre and the Oilers have been their usual brand of awful so who knew what could happen? The answer would be to write another chapter in the ‘How Will the Oilers Annoy Me’ handbook. This time they chose the route of completely neglecting to show up for most of the hockey game apart from two minutes in the second period. It was a bold strategy. Not smart, mind you. Boldness or stupidity aside, whatever the Oilers DID plan on doing in tonight’s game failed miserably.
I’m not sure what I expected to happen tonight, but I didn’t necessarily expect most of the team to forget there was a game. Apart from a few players, this game was a garbage fire for the Oilers, and I’m sure the smell of it went wafting throughout the NHL. Those of us still watching these things saw an Edmonton team that looked disinterested, and one that was (mostly – read: McDavid aside) unable get anything going offensively. It was ugly. On the bright side, people that hate when the Oilers have moral victories must be thrilled because there weren’t too many positives to talk about. To put it simply, tonight’s game was a horrible end to a horrible home stand. End of story.
We wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • Connor McDavid makes everything better. If it weren’t for him the Oilers wouldn’t have had any chances throughout most of this hockey game. He may be the only reason to watch Oilers games down the stretch.
  • Jordan Eberle scored his 19th goal of the season off of a nice passing play by Connor McDavid and Brandon Davidson. Jordan Eberle finished off the play by driving to the net and putting the rebound away.
  • He didn’t score but I thought Nail Yakupov was one of the few forwards with any jump tonight. He drove to the net, had two good shots, and wins bonus points for looking like he actually cared.
  • Brandon Davidson was great again tonight. Sign the man. Do it now.
  • Cam Talbot got hung out to dry on so many occasions tonight that it’s hard to really fault him for much of what happened out there. I think he played better than his stats will tell you (except for maybe that third goal). Talbot finished with 21 saves and an .875 save%.
  • We got #SchultzTradeBenefits trending, and that was pretty hilarious. Fine job there, people.

THE FACE PALMERS

  • Five losses in a row. *fart sound*
  • This game was an absolute snooze fest.
  • Nick Paul scored his first NHL goal against the Oilers. Least surprising news of the night.
  • Speaking of Nick Paul’s first NHL goal, what the hell what Justin Schultz staring at? The Schultz counters is now at three games remaining. By the way, how did Justin Schultz play the most minutes of any Oiler with 21:19?
  • Were you wondering how the power play did tonight? Sucked. Terrible. Missed opportunities aplenty, went 0/3 on the night.
  • How many times have the Oilers given up the puck at the opposing blue line? Two-three hundred thousand?
  • The Oilers had 32 shots on goal tonight but how many of them were from the outside, or lobs from the blue line?
  • Edmonton is great at missing coverage in the defensive zone. Hell yeah.
  • The Oilers went 40% in the faceoff circle.
  • Todd McLellan said that some guys should be embarrassed when they leave the rink tonight, and I agree.
