Some thoughts…
- Ken Holland mentioned the other day on a podcast appearance that he preferred having his teams go on a road trip early in the season rather than getting comfortable playing a bunch of games at home to kick things off. The Oilers had an uneven start to the season during their six-game homestand but really patched things up during this three-game trip. The team defence is starting to sort itself out as players find their roles.
- One player who’s quietly been a difference-maker for the Oilers on the defensive end of the ice is Markus Niemelainen. He played 15:25 against the Flames, a season-high, and fared well on the penalty kill. He’s been better than Ryan Murray this far and affords the Oilers the ability to take their time with Philip Broberg, who made his 2022-23 season debut for the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday.

- The joke in my lede aside, the Flames played a strong game on Saturday. If not for that flub from Markstrom and Skinner’s brilliance, they easily could have won this game as they outshot the Oilers 42-to-26. They did well over the off-season to replace Johnny Gaudreau and Matt Tkachuk with Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri, and MacKenzie Weegar. It’s very, very early but this version of the Flames looks like a more difficult opponent to beat in the playoffs.

- We’ll finish off with Skinner, who’s established himself as Edmonton’s No. 1 goaltender for the time being. Though Jack Campbell is the $25 million man, this is more of a 1A and 1B tandem than a starter and a backup situation and the Oilers should roll with Skinner while he’s hot.
- The Oilers and Flames will next play on December 27 in Calgary, right after the Christmas break. It’ll unfortunately be the third and final meeting between the two teams in the regular season.
