Getting to Know Oilersnation: Kennedy(strash) Burgardt

One Direction broke up 10 years ago, and Directioners were converted to Edmonton Oilers fans.
Or at least one was, and that’s Oilersnation’s very own Kennedy Burgardt, known online as Kennedystrash.
After the great split of One Direction, she was scrolling on Vine (rest in peace) and a clip of Connor McDavid ‘splitting the D’ against the Columbus Blue Jackets popped up on her feed. She thought, “Hmm… this guy is kind of cool!”
Now, she’s not just a fan of the sport, but she also works in it. The McDavid effect, ladies and gentlemen.
“I don’t think I ever saw myself working in sports to be honest,” she said. “It just kind of happened.”
Burgardt started her love for the arts in junior high, when she travelled to Los Angeles every summer with her family to do the Warner Brothers Tour at Universal Studios. She went to Victoria School of the Arts in high school and aspired to work in the film and television industry in Hollywood.
At NAIT, she studied digital media and IT, while also posting on Twitter about her love for McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the Edmonton Oilers as a whole.
“I was posting my edits and love for the Edmonton Oilers on Twitter, and I had Baggedmilk and Jay Downton in my DMs,” she said. “Then I designed a t-shirt for them, and the rest was history.”
“I used to work at the Oilers store in Kingsway, so I really have made hockey my entire personality ever since I found it. The hyperfixation goes crazy.”
Her introduction into the sports industry was unexpected, but not unwelcome.
“I feel like it has been really rewarding to participate in this environment, being indoctrinated into this already built fanbase and feeling like I am really a part of it too. It becomes a ‘we’ thing instead of a ‘me’ thing.”
Burgardt said she is most proud of providing elevated experiences on the Nation Vacations, which if you are unfamiliar with these events, they are hockey-centric trips where the Nation crew and citizens maximize their “conjoined slay” and bring the passion of Oil Country to other NHL cities.
“My Nation Vacations are my babies. I never thought I would be in a position to merge sports and recreational travel,” she said. “Seeing how good the community is and how fun these trips are, I want to make sure everyone feels included. It is very rewarding to see how these things come together and how people reminisce about them for years, or wanna be on the next one. It’s only going to get better from here.”
Joining Oilersnation has been an overall surreal experience for her. She said that going from being just another fan online, to working for a company with such a large follower base was quite the jump.
“I am just a nerdy hockey fan online who likes to talk to her friends. Now there are people who have learned about my little quirks and are a part of my inside jokes like ‘Leon you hot b*tch,’ or people recognize me and are like, ‘Hey! I follow you, I know you are a big Leon Draisaitl fan,’ and I am like, ‘Oh. I’m so sorry.’ I always want to apologize.”
This doesn’t come without added pressure for Burgardt though. Especially being a woman in the sports industry, which is an uphill climb on its own, even more so when you maintain an active presence online. She said, “There is definitely fatigue… and sometimes questioning if this is what I want to do forever. Especially with digital media changing and evolving all the time. There can be a lot of uncertainty and unpredictability.”
As for being the first woman in the office, she has found that the guys at Oilersnation are all very helpful and have her back.
“They’re all like my brothers in a way,” she said, adding on how the content production side started with Baggedmilk, Jay Downton, Wanye, and Dan Gallant. Then, she joined at the same time as Tyler Yaremchuk, Liam Horrobin, and Matthew Wozniak. This group has been together for a long time and they lean on each other when necessary.
Except for right now as Burgardt and Horrobin are in intense negotiations over the “Oil to the Max” t-shirt idea that Horrobin is desperately trying, and failing, to sell Burgardt on.
“Oil to the Max is dead,” she said. “Hashtag give it up Liam, hashtag fire Liam. We have actually sold him to Flamesnation for a bag of pucks.”
These are all just jokes of course.
Rapid Fire With Kennedystrash
Favourite Oilers player
Leon Draisaitl. Unfortunately (laughs), back when he was called “Lazy Leon” I decided to make him a birthday sign, because everyone was hating on him, and I think we shouldn’t hate on the pretty girl (laughs). Then the rest is history, that’s my boy, that’s my star.
Favourite colour
Green. No reason, honestly, I just love dark green. I loved Tinkerbell when I was younger, so maybe that’s why.
Favourite food
Mashed potatoes. Sometimes you just need a big bowl of mashed potatoes.
Favourite travel destination
London or Paris. Travelling is the best learning experience you will ever have and it teaches you so much about yourself. If you can figure out how to do public transportation in any city, then you can do anything.
Number one fear
How much time do you have? Just kidding. My biggest fear is honestly people not believing I am genuine enough in what I do. I put everything into anything, and sometimes I am afraid that isn’t reflected.
Favourite movie
“The Holiday” with Cameron Diaz. Any time, any day, any season, I can probably recite the whole movie. It’s such a feel-good movie. I love the old man, he just casually has an Oscar.
Favourite video game
Animal Crossing. That’s it. That’s the only game I play.
Favourite musical artist
Taylor Swift has been my number one for the last five years, and I don’t think that is going to change. Harry Styles is on the same level, I am going to London to see him in a few weeks. Taylor Swift has a lyric for every mood you could possibly experience. I feel too much all the time, and she gets me.
Favourite hockey memory
Meeting Leashadawg, can I say that? I’ll never forget when we were in the players’ walkout tunnel at Photo Day, and you came up to me and asked if I was in the editing community and said, “I was the Talbot fan” and I was like, ” Why were we both the only two people making Talbot edits?” I think that was the first time I was like, “Oh wait, my stuff is getting noticed.”
