Please read all of Liam’s quotes in an English accent.
Liam Horrobin wasn’t born in Canada, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by his passion and knowledge for the nation’s favourite sport – hockey. So, when it came to picking a career, he decided he would stick to what he knew, and now here he is at Oilersnation.
“I wasn’t really good at anything else,” Horrobin said. “I took a year off of school and was working at a Chinese buffet. My mom said, ‘Why don’t you just go into radio? All you do is talk about sports anyway,’ and I realized that was a good idea. So then I went to NAIT for T.V. and Broadcasting.”
Working in sports wasn’t always the dream for Horrobin. Growing up, he wanted to be a zookeeper, however, that dream died after day one of Grade 12 biology, when he finished class with nine pages of notes.
“I sucked at biology… I didn’t even make it to day two. I just dropped the class,” he said.
Horrobin met his current co-host Tyler Yaremchuk at NAIT. The two worked together with the Sherwood Park Crusaders as their school-required internship.
“Tyler and I ran a hockey website called Below the Ice, and we had a radio show,” he said, adding that he learned a lot over the years about what types of content people want to watch. “Then we got a deal with the Sherwood Park Crusaders to do all their postgame stuff. We had a podcast there, so that’s kind of where everything took off.”
Now he and Yaremchuk host Oilersnation Everyday, where he has developed his own segment called “Liam’s Board.”
“Here’s the truth. I don’t really love talking about the Oilers all the time. It can kind of get boring, so I wanted to mix in different things when we were on the show,” he said, adding that Yaremchuk was the one who came up with the idea to turn it into a segment. “The plan is to eventually change it from ‘Liam’s Board’ to ‘Liam’s Bored.’”
His family moved here from England when he was 14 years old. One of his first memories here was bringing a soccer ball to school, and developing his skill for juggling with his feet.
“I wanted to try and make some friends,” he said. “This kid, who is now one of my groomsmen at my wedding, stood on the table and was like, ‘Oh Liam, juggle for us and show us what you can do,’ and I couldn’t do it. It felt like the entirety of Sherwood Park was watching me and I could only juggle four. Since then, I have been dedicated to making sure that never happens again. I can probably do like upwards of 70 now.”
Fun fact: Horrobin is getting married on July 18, which will be exactly 16 years since he first moved to Canada. This was a complete coincidence, and he didn’t know the two dates were the same until his parents pointed it out to him.
Another coincidence was Taylor Hall becoming his favourite hockey player. Hall had just been drafted by the Edmonton Oilers the summer he arrived here. He also said that he loved Jordan Eberle, just like every other 14-year-old boy in Edmonton did at the time.
“The circumstance of living in Edmonton, where everyone talks about the Oilers,” Horrobin spoke about his origins of becoming a hockey fan. “If you want to fit in you kind of need to know hockey. I have always loved sports, so it was easy for me to grow to appreciate it.”

Rapid fire questions

Favourite Oiler
“Probably Draisaitl. I like his swagger, he is very nonchalant but also one of the best players in the world. I also like how he is similar to me, I guess, with his nontraditional path to the NHL. Germany has become a decent hockey nation, but it’s really not.”
Favourite Animal
“Red pandas are pretty sweet, but spider monkeys are cool too.”
Favourite colour
“Green. It’s a cool colour, that’s it. In the summer everything is green, it’s very vibrant and refreshing.”
Favourite food
“Pizza. Standard pepperoni is good. I would eat pizza every single day for every meal. I’ll definitely have to cut down when I get a joint bank account… I was going there that often that I wouldn’t even have to tell them my name for pickup orders, they’d just hand it to me.”
Number one fear
“The ocean, because I can’t swim. But also because of what’s in the ocean. I’m also afraid of heights. When they went to space a month or so ago, he said, you’re not scared of height, you’re scared of gravity. So I guess I am actually scared of gravity.”
Favourite movie
“A movie called Spotlight. It has a crazy cast with Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams. It’s about how the Boston Globe took down the Catholic Church… but my fiancé is a Catholic school teacher, so we don’t really watch it that often. I also grew up during the Marvel phase. The Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy is really good, I like Thor too, personally. My favourite though has to be the Captain America one.”
Favourite video game
“I like playing tycoon games. Sometimes I just put on an audiobook and play the Jurassic Park tycoon games where you get to build your own park. It’s very relaxing. Then after a couple hours you just realized you wasted your time, so I try not to do it too often.”
Favourite hockey memory
“It’s pretty niche, but it’s a Crusaders one, because I was there. I can’t remember what year it was, but they were playing Spruce Grove, and it was the first year where the organization looked like it was going in the right direction.
They got absolutely smoked by Spruce Grove in shots, but the game ended one-one, and Matt Berlin was the goalie, and he was unbelievable. In the first couple of minutes of overtime, Mike Benning took a kneeing penalty, and Spruce Grove went on a power play – couldn’t beat Berlin.
The Crusaders got a power play, and Arjun Atwal scored. They had less than 10 shots that game, it was so crazy, I am getting goosebumps just thinking about it. That was the first time they had ever sold out the arena, and the work we all put into it to get to that moment, it just felt like we might win this whole damn thing. Then we lost the next four games in a row, but that moment was insane.”
