Aaron “Bordzy” Bordato always knew he wanted to be in sports commentary.
“Most kids grew up watching Disney cartoons,” he said. “Instead of Saturday morning cartoons, it was a Sportscentre on TSN… From as young as I can remember, I was watching Jay and Dan, and thinking ‘Oh my gosh, they can do sports AND be funny at the same time?’ That broke my brain.”
Bordzy’s first taste of broadcasting was at Bev Facey Community High in Sherwood Park. In the first semester of Grade 12 he got suspended, and the principal challenged him to take on their school’s broadcast, Facey TV. This was a punishment to him because he thought the show was boring, but the principal ego-checked him and said, “Maybe if you do it, it won’t be boring.”
And he does not back away from a challenge.
So, that’s what Bordzy did, and it ended up being part of the reason he was accepted into NAIT’s TV and Broadcasting program. He did his internship out in Lloydminster and lived in an older woman’s basement, who hardly spoke any English.
“Shoutout to Sofia,” he said.
His first “legit” job was with the University of Alberta sports department, where he started as a producer for the women’s basketball team. As time went on, he took on more and more teams, until he eventually became the head of production. He met Tyler Yaremchuk there, as Yaremchuk was doing their play-by-play at the time. This connection was ultimately what landed him a job here at Oilersnation.
“There was a game, it was like 5-10 minutes before puck drop. We were supposed to already be live. I was not around the system when I got a phone call, so I knew something was wrong,” he said, adding that their entire system had malfunctioned, and he frantically had to get everything back in order. “I fixed it. Right as the puck got dropped, we went live, no one at home knew that the system went down.”
“At the first intermission, Tyler came up to me, and he goes, ‘So Bordz, do you actually know how all this stuff works?’ and I was like ‘Yeah Ty, I’ve been working with you for years, and if I didn’t, I probably wouldn’t be very good at my job.'”
Oilersnation Everyday (ONE) had just started at this point, and according to Bordato, they were in need of a producer that had experience with the equipment. Yaremchuk offered him a job interview, and they met the next week at the restaurant underneath Nation HQ.
“I’ll never forget Tyler leading the interview, the entire thing, and there was another person there, who didn’t talk the entire time,” Bordato said. “The moment he spoke out loud – I could pick that voice out of a lineup – I went ‘Holy sh*t that’s Baggedmilk! Stay calm. Stay calm. Stay calm.’ And then yeah, I got hired.”
When asked about his first impression of Baggedmilk, Bordato said, “He’s handsome, he’s hot. You would think someone hiding their identity would not be as hot as BM is. I’ll stand by that.”
Pre-Gaming with Bordzy‘s origin came quite unexpectedly. The Nation Network (TNN) was looking to start a pre-game show for Oilers games, and they were taking applications before ultimately landing to give the show to Bordato.
“I never applied. I was so busy with other things that it never occurred to me,” Bordato said, mentioning that he had already worked from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. every day. “There was one day that BM, and Tyler were talking, and then BM said ‘Why don’t we just get Bordzy to do it?’ they both looked at me and Tyler said ‘Would that interest you?’ and I went ‘UH HUH!‘ and that was the start of it.”
The coolest part for him since the show took off? Having people he has never met before come up to him yelling “Bordzy! Bordzy!” which he warmly welcomes.
“Sometimes I feel like I need to pinch myself. At the end of the day I am just a normal guy who loves the Oilers, all of us are. It’s so cool that we get to live out our dreams.”
Bordato is “technically” the head of production at TNN, he said, “I was flown out and put in a hotel for four nights to build [the trade deadline show for Daily Faceoff]. I set it all up, produced it, directed it, and everything. Ideally I will do it again for July 1st’s free agency.”

BORDZY’S PICKS

Favourite Oiler
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. I feel like I grew up with him, we are only two years apart. He is the OG, the golden boy, he is everything. Keep Nuge forever.
Favourite colour
Red, without a doubt. My car is red, my phone is red, my waterbottle is red, all hats and most things I wear are red. Everything is red.
Favourite food
Pizza or pasta. I rely on the wheel a lot — if you know me you know my love for the wheel. Pepperoni mushroom is a staple for me, as for pasta, I’ll eat anything, but my favourite would have to be fettuccini alfredo. Another classic.
Favourite travel destination
Nothing beats an all-inclusive Mexico trip. Financially, you probably get the most bang for your buck going to Mexico, and I am pasty, so I burn a lot, but as long as there are free drinks and free food, I am happy.
Biggest fear
Horses. Once, when I was five, I was feeding a horse, and it took a bite out of my hand all the way down to my wrist. Then when I was probably fifteen, I was trying to get over it, so I rode one of my friends’ horses, and he smacked it on the *ss so it would take off with me on it. I was so terrified that I jumped off the horse, and hurt my shoulder. Now I will never go around a horse again.
Favourite movie
The Dark Knight. I am a big Batman guy. If I were to give a podium, it would be The Dark Knight, Superbad, and I recommend everyone go and watch Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, if you know you know. People who have seen it are going to think it’s a great pick, but most people probably haven’t.
Favourite video game
I’ve never been too much of a video-game guy, but in COVID, I got into Call of Duty Warzone with my buddies. If I am going to play video games, though it’s almost always sports games. Nothing beats ‘Chel (NHL) with the boys.
Favourite hockey memory
The 2024 Stanley Cup Final. Those eight weeks of nothing but partying downtown (during the playoffs) were so much fun. The comeback from being down 3-0 in the final… going into Game 7, there was not a single doubt in my mind that the Oilers were going to lose. There was nothing like that year’s playoffs for me.
