Inside the Nation: Strome for Spooner

Nov 16, 2018, 16:30 ESTUpdated: Nov 16, 2018, 16:40 EST
The Edmonton Oilers spiced things up today as news broke that they had traded Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers in exchange for Ryan Spooner. Why would the Oilers make this trade? Let’s explore it together.
Since no one expected the Oilers to make a trade like this today, it made sense for Dusty to jump on Facebook Live for an emergency episode of Inside the Nation. Considering, the fact that Ryan Strome was acquired in the Jordan Eberle trade only 16 months ago, it does seem strange that the Oilers would move on from him so early so Dusty tries to make sense of what Peter Chiarelli sees in Spooner over Strome. Looking at the numbers, what you’ll see is that Spooner should probably be an upgrade offensively over Ryan Strome but the exact opposite on the defensive side of the puck. So why would the Oilers feel the need to make this trade now? Dusty Nielson tries to make sense of it all.
