This afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers announced via their Twitter account that Jujhar Khaira has been activated from the injured reserve after missing the past couple of weeks with a lower-body injury.
After missing the last few weeks with an undisclosed lower-body injury, Jujhar Khaira could be back in the lineup as early as tonight as the team has finally reactivated the former third-round pick from the injured reserve. Just last week, rumours were flying around Twitter that Jujhar had suffered some kind of stress fracture that could keep him out of the lineup for longer than the initial 2-3 week prognosis but, fortunately, those concerns appear to be gone with today’s news. Considering the way Khaira had been playing over the past little while before getting hurt, his injury couldn’t have come at a worse time as he had appeared to be rounding into form and looking more like the guy that set a career high in goals and points last season.
According to Ken Hitchcock, Khaira has been looking good at practice but will still need the team doctors to clear him before officially returning to the lineup. Seeing as the Oilers are rolling a little bit right now, I wonder whether or not they’ll want to get him back in as soon as possible or if they’d wait for the winning streak to end before slotting him back in. If Khaira was to return, the Oilers will need to pull someone out to make room which makes me think it would be either Josh Currie, Brad Malone, or Ty Rattie that gets the bump. With Currie putting up four points in his last five games, you’d have to wonder what kind of appetite there would to make him the scratch so I’d guess it’ll be someone else. That said, I’m really only guessing at this point and we’ll have to wait and see what comes next. At the time of posting, the Oilers have Khaira listed as a game-time decision ahead of tonight’s matchup against the Vancouver Canucks after missing the last 10 games.
In 53 games played this season, Jujhar Khaira has three goals and 13 assists for 16 points, which is only five points off his career high.
