This morning, Edmonton Oilers general manager, Ken Holland, formally announced the news we were all expecting when it was confirmed that Oscar Klefbom will miss the entire 2020-21 season because of a shoulder injury.

Back in early October, Ken Holland revealed that Oscar Klefbom has been playing with an injured should for quite some time and that the team was concerned that he may miss some or all of the 2020-21 NHL season. This morning, those fears were confirmed when the GM jumped on the air with Bob Stauffer, announcing that the Oilers’ best defencemen would indeed miss the entire campaign as he works to rehab the nagging shoulder injury. Holland also added that no decision has been made yet on whether or not the 27-year-old blueliner will undergo surgery to repair the should, though he did add that Klefbom is hoping to be ready for the start of the next season.

In 2019-20, the Karlstad, Sweden, native led all Oilers defenceman in scoring after registering five goals and 29 assists for a total of 34 points in 62 games. Outside of leading the Oilers in terms of offensive production from a defenceman, he also led the team in average time on ice with 25:25 in all situations to go along with 159 shots on goal, a 46.7 CF% and a 51.9 oZS%, which means this is a hefty hole to plug and one that will have to get patched up by commity. Klefbom has now spent seven seasons with the Oilers since being drafted 19th overall in 2011, and his absence will undoubtedly be felt on a blue line that has struggled with its coverage over the past few years.
