Leon Draisaitl continued to add to his impressive resume Thursday night as he scored his 150th power play goal.
It came in the Edmonton Oilers 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, and while Draisaitl scored a goal at five-on-five early in the second period, his second goal of the game was the big one.
The Oilers got a power play with just under seven minutes left in the game and it didn’t take long for them to get to work. Draisaitl found himself all alone in the slot, as Connor McDavid was able to quickly dish him the puck from down low. Draisaitl let the puck go as quickly as it arrived on his stick, wiring a shot top shelf over Daniil Tarasov.
For Draisaitl, he became the first member of the Oilers to score 150 power play goals with the team continuing to build a lead over Glenn Anderson and Ryan Smyth, both of whom scored 126 with the Copper and Blue.
He also put himself in elite company as just the 56th player to score 150 man-advantage markers. Among those 55, he ranks fifth in power play goals per game, trailing just Brett Hull (.21), Alex Ovechkin (.22), Mike Bossy (.24) and the great Mario Lemieux (.26). Draisaitl might be in tough to reach the all-time record, which is currently held and growing by Ovechkin, who has scored a wild 316 power play goals in his career, 42 more than the second placed Dave Andreychuk.
It’s reasonable to think he could get close, though. The only other active players with over 150 are Sidney Crosby (175), Evgeni Malkin (180), Steven Stamkos (220) and Ovechkin. If Draisaitl kept scoring at the pace he is and played six more seasons, he would finish with 248 goals, good enough for fifth all-time.
Draisaitl’s goal being assisted by McDavid was only fitting, considering that’s now his 114th power play goal assisted by the Oilers captain. Talk about a Dynamic Duo.
