There have been no discussions between the Edmonton Oilers and Matt Savoie on a possible long-term extension, according to the player’s agent on Tuesday.

Gerry Johannson of The Sports Corporation joined Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer to talk about contracts his clients have received this off-season, including Colton Dach.

But for the long term, the biggest what-if on the Oilers’ books is the next contract for Savoie, who has one year left on his current deal before he becomes a restricted free agent.

With the Oilers’ focus on the current roster for the 2026-27 season, those conversations haven’t begun yet.

“We haven’t, only because I think Edmonton’s in a unique position where they’re in a win-now mode,” said Johannson.

“Matt really likes it here, and we’d love him to stay here. I know he would. I think in talking to Stan that will come. But as we know, Edmonton is pretty focused on this year. I think Matt is patient and really enjoys it here and did a good job last year, so we’re excited to see what he can do. I’m sure we’ll get down to that sooner than later.”

Savoie’s play grew after the Olympic break, highlighted by 19 points in the last 24 games of the regular season. That was a terrific pace compared to 18 points in 58 games to begin the campaign. However, he did struggle in the post-season, registering one assist in six games.

Some have wondered whether it’s a good idea to extend Savoie now to avoid any possible offer-sheet scenario, as the Oilers went through with Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway two summers ago.

Regardless, Savoie projects to be a top-six forward in the Oilers lineup, while already logging over 132 minutes on the penalty kill in 2025-26, which led all Edmonton forwards.

Johannson also commented on the two-year contract for his other Oilers client Colton Dach.

“It’s a really good spot for him,” he said. “He’s really happy here, and he’s made really steady progress since he was drafted, frankly.

“But I think moving from Chicago to Edmonton was a really good move for him. It buys us time to see what he can do on a really good team.”
