The great poet William Smith of West Philadelphia once wrote:
Summer, summer, summertime
Time to sit back and unwind
And unwind we shall with a little game of “which team would win in a best-on-best tournament of the cities” within the Nation Network.
In this fight, the rules are, there are no rules, except for the rules.
  1. The teams will consist of ONLY players that played 25 or more games in the NHL, from the Nation Network City. That means (because we know Connor McDavid never wants to play in Toronto) greater metro areas like Richmond Hill to Toronto or Delta to Vancouver… DO NOT COUNT. They have to have to have it listed as their hometown on wiki
  2. I allow 3 players (designated with an “O”) I call “over-agers” (Born before 1970) SO AS TO NOT SEEM SO OLD
  3. Position doesn’t matter so much. I tried to stick with it.
  4. You will be the judge of who wins.
Staring from Eastest to Westest:

Toronto Smog:

Tyler Toffoli – Dale Hawerchuk O – Keith Primeau
Josh Ho-Sang – Mike Peca – Connor Brown
Anson Carter – Dave Bolland – Mike Knuble
Chris Stewart – Kris Draper – Joel Ward
Andrew Cogliano
Brad Park O – PK Subban
Adam Foote – Mark Giordano
Dougie Hamilton – Trevor Daley
Greg Millen O
Bob Essensa
Now that’s a heck of a roster. The over-ager rule kept this team from being all time great. I had to leave off Rick Middleton who is amazing to have Park in the mix. The only real weakness (if you can call it that) here would be goaltending. But with that D in front of them, you could put up a cardboard cut out of Millen and it will still be amazing.

Detroit Michigan Octopi:

Brian Rolston – Mike Modano – David Booth
Kelly Miller O – Doug Weight – Dylan Larkin
Alec Martinez – Mike York – Mike Grier
Justin Abdelkader – Ryan Kesler – David Legwand
Mark Howe O – Andy Greene
Kevin Hatcher O – Derian Hatcher
Torey Krug – Jacob Trouba
John Vanbiesbrouck
Jeff Zatkoff
The competition committee has been contacted and the at the writing of this article, a ruling is pending. The folks at Wingsnation are rumoured to be punished swiftly and decisively. Until then, we will allow them to use Michigan-born players. Preference was given to players out of Detroit.
The younger Howe and his 742 points leads this Team America. A shockingly comfortably strong forward corps followed behind by a D that has some mean streak and will pot some goals itself. Vanbiesbrouck is a wall back there.

Winnipeg Coyote Thrashers:

Patrick Sharp – Jonathan Toews – Andy Bathgate O
Max Domi – Alexander Steen – Mark Stone
Darren Helm – Travis Zajac – Cody Eakin
Mike Leclerc – Ryan Reaves – Dale Weise
Nigel Dawes
Duncan Keith – Cam Barker
Michael Stone – Craig Millar
Bryan Muir – Dylan McIlrath
Terry Sawchuk O
James Reimer
Winnipeg’s team is sneaky good. The defence could use some help. But HoF member Sawchuk locking it down in the net is solid. Blackhawks up front to lead the way.

Edmonton Malls:

Johnny Bucyk O – Mark Messier O – Jarome Iginla
Mike Comrie – Daymond Langkow – Brendan Gallagher
Tyler Ennis – Bryan Little – Fernando Pisani
Jason Chimera – Brad Isbister – Vern Fiddler
Steven Reinprecht
Scott Niedermayer – Darryl Sydor
Dion Phaneuf – Jay Bouwmeester
Andrew Ference – Johnny Boychuk
Kelly Hrudey O
Jamie McLennan
A team in Edmonton that would grind you down to mincemeat. In a seven game series, trouble would be had for the opponents. That’s an amazing solid D corps. Net leaves a little to be desired. Noodles may get the call to come in half way through the tourney.

Calgary Stetsons:

Taylor Hall – Mike Rogers O – William Nylander
Mason Raymond – Brayden Point – Patrick Eaves
Robert Nilsson – Joe Colborne – T.J. Galiardi
Adam Lowry – Wes Walz – Ty Rattie
Jeff Tambellini
Mike Green – Brent Sopel
Nolan Baumgartner – Braydon Coburn
Jason Smith – Thomas Hickey
Josh Morrissey
Mike Vernon O
Chad Johnson
Sweden of Canada? Nylander and Nilsson who have worn the Tre Kornor both hail from Cowtown and would be a part of one of the sneaky good top lines in the tourney. Defence is boom or bust with this squad in front of the always good Vernon.

Vancouver Pacifics:

Paul Kariya – Ryan Johansen – Glenn Anderson O
Milan Lucic – Mike Santorelli – Troy Brouwer
Evander Kane – Mathew Barzal – Chuck Kobasew
Aaron Voros – Sebastien Bordeleau – Max Reinhart
Mike Kennedy
Steve Montador – Shaone Morrisonn
Barry Beck O – Stefan Elliott
Dean Malkoc – Tim Bothwell O
Carey Price
Joaquin Gage
Darkhorse of the tournament to take it all I say. Vancouver is a team. In that they are what I would actually try and build. Price in the net, a solid top two lines and an all around D corps.
So there you go. Who wins in a tournament? Which is your favorite squad? Let us know.
