Handicapping the Kraken (22-28 SU, 26-24 ATS, 24-23-3 O/U)
After a brutal 2-7-1 stretch that included a 4-2 home loss to the Oilers on Jan. 4, the Kraken are 5-3-0 in their last eight games. However, it has been a little over two years since Seattle last defeated the Oilers.
Seattle is 5-6-1 against Pacific Division teams this season, but only six of the Kraken’s 22 wins have come against teams currently in a playoff position. They are also 3-10 straight up against playoff teams since the start of December. The Kraken’s success has been largely dependent on goaltending, as Joey Daccord is 17-11-2, while Philipp Grubauer is 5-14-1. Grubauer hasn’t won a game since Dec. 30, going 0-4-1 in his last five starts.
From a betting perspective, the Kraken rank in the bottom half of the league in moneyline profit, though they have broken even as underdogs. That said, there isn’t a large sample of games where Seattle’s odds are as long as they’ll be on Monday. The Kraken are 1-3 as road underdogs when their odds are +200 or longer.
Per Evolving Hockey, Seattle ranks among the bottom five teams in five-on-five expected goals, shot attempts, and shots. Only four teams have generated fewer expected goals per 60 minutes, and the same applies for expected goals against. Additionally, Seattle has allowed more shot attempts per 60 minutes than all but two teams.
One reason not to take Seattle lightly is their ability to come back in games. The Kraken have recorded 13 come-from-behind wins this season, including five in the third period.
Handicapping the Oilers (31-18 SU, 19-30 ATS, 21-27-1 O/U)
Oilers captain Connor McDavid will return from his three-game suspension on Monday as the Edmonton Oilers continue their six-game homestand at Rogers Place.
McDavid’s teammates stepped up to carry the load during his absence, delivering a strong effort against the Capitals despite losing, a commanding 6-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks, and a close 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Zach Hyman all had standout performances while McDavid was out, and that production should continue with McDavid back in the lineup. Draisaitl has 25 points (six goals, 19 assists) in 12 career games against the Kraken, while McDavid has seven goals and 11 assists in 11 career games versus Seattle. Meanwhile, Hyman (8-8–16) and Nugent-Hopkins (2-12–14) have also averaged more than a point per game against the Kraken in 11 games since the 2021-22 season.
Edmonton is 10-2 against Seattle since the Kraken entered the league in 2021-22, including seven consecutive wins. The Oilers have averaged 4.25 goals per game in those meetings while allowing just 2.58 goals against per game. Additionally, the Oilers are 14-3 as big home favorites (-170 or greater) this season.
However, Saturday’s game versus Buffalo was another example of Edmonton’s tendency to play down to weaker competition, as they have only covered the puck line in six of those 17 games. When it comes to regulation wins, Edmonton is just 9-8 in home games where its moneyline odds are -170 or greater.
Best bets for Sabres vs. Oilers
Leon Draisaitl Over 1.5 Points (+117) at Pinnacle
Draisaitl didn’t register a point in Edmonton’s 3-2 win over Buffalo on Saturday, but he has only gone pointless in consecutive games twice all season. Furthermore, Draisaitl had recorded multiple points in seven of the previous 10 games, including four straight, before Saturday’s matchup. This season, the 29-year-old has notched 26 multi-point games and has registered nine multi-point performances in 11 career games against the Kraken. Notably, he has registered multi-point games in four of the five times Seattle has visited Rogers Place.
Connor McDavid Anytime Goal (+143) at Pinnacle
Surprisingly, McDavid has only registered multiple points in four out of 12 career games versus Seattle, and hasn’t done so once in five home games against the Kraken. However, McDavid had scored five goals in seven games before his suspension, and he’s also lit the lamp in three out of his last four home games against Seattle. McDavid has 22 shots in five career home games versus the Kraken, who rank among the bottom-10 teams in shots against per 60 minutes over the last month.
