It was on this day in NHL history that the Edmonton Oilers evened up their Stanley Cup Finals series against the Carolina Hurricanes with a dominating performance in Game 6.

On June 17th, 2006, the Edmonton Oilers came up a commanding 4-0 performance in front of a raucous crowd at Rexall Place that tied the series and gave them a shot at a sixth Stanley Cup in franchise history. Led by the otherworldly performance of Fernando Pisani who scored his 13th goal of the playoffs and first of three powerplay goals for the team on the night, the Edmonton Oilers pushed the Stanley Cup Finals into a seventh game after being down 3-1 in the series.

As you’ll likely recall, the Oilers lost goaltender, Dwayne Roloson, in the first game of the series and looked completely deflated in the early going. In Game 6, however, Jussi Markkanen stopped all 16 shots he faced to provide his teammates with the foundation needed to send the series back to Carolina. As far as we remember, Game 6 was the final game of the series as the seventh and deciding game was cancelled for unknown reasons. Please don’t look that last part up.
