Matvei Petrov will be sticking around in Russia.
The former Edmonton Oilers prospect originally signed a professional tryout with Spartak Moscow of the KHL in late July. That PTO has translated to a two-year contract for the 23-year-old, according to multiple sources. He had been offered a qualifying offer by the Oilers at the start of free agency, but elected to go elsewhere.
Things just didn’t work out with Petrov, who at one time seemed like an exciting possibility after his success in junior. Petrov was selected by the Oilers in the sixth round, 180th overall, in the 2021 draft.
He then joined the Ontario Hockey League’s North Bay Battalion, where he put up huge offensive numbers, scoring 67 goals and 183 points in 128 games. He turned pro ahead of the 2023-24 season, joining the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, but struggled to get his footing. Across three seasons and 141 games, he scored just 23 goals and 42 points. At points of this past season, the winger was playing centre on the fourth line due to roster limitations.
Spartak Moscow features some former NHLers who’ve had tumultuous careers, including former third overall pick Alex Galchenyuk and Max Comtois.
Another prospect, Roby Järventie, who joined the organization in a July 2024 trade that sent Xavier Bourgault to the Ottawa Senators, signed a deal with the Swiss League’s HC Ambri-Piotta. The 23-year-old appeared in 61 games for the Condors this year, scoring 23 goals and 47 points.
