Matvei Petrov is taking his talents overseas.

The former Edmonton Oilers prospect signed a trial agreement with the Kontinental Hockey League’s Spartak Moscow last week.

Petrov, 23, was selected by the Oilers in the sixth round, 180th overall, in the 2021 draft. He had just finished a season in the MHL, Russia’s men’s under-20 junior league, racking up 22 goals and 42 points in 58 games.

He then joined the Ontario Hockey League’s North Bay Battalion, where he put up huge offensive numbers, scoring 67 goals and 183 points in 128 games. He turned pro ahead of the 2023-24 season, joining the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, but struggled to get his footing. Across three seasons and 141 games, he scored just 23 goals and 42 points. At points of this past season, the winger was playing centre on the fourth line due to roster limitations.

It was clear that Petrov struggled to adapt to the pro game, playing largely in a depth role, so it’s no big surprise that he’s returned to Russia.

Petrov didn’t land on Oilersnation prospect countdown last summer, but was listed as an honourable mention.

The winger is one of a few players and prospects who left the organization this summer. Winger James Hamblin signed with the Anaheim Ducks, leaving the Oilers after six years in the organization. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Condors in 2020, earning an entry-level contract with the Oilers in 2022. He appeared in 282 games for the Condors, scoring 88 goals and 172 points, adding two goals and three points in 41 NHL games with the Oilers.

Roby Järventie, who joined the organization in a July 2024 trade that sent Xavier Bourgault to the Ottawa Senators, signed a deal with the Swiss League’s HC Ambri-Piotta. The 23-year-old appeared in 61 games for the Condors this year, scoring 23 goals and 47 points.

Calvin Pickard, meanwhile, signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Wild.
