It was a busy Canada Day for most National Hockey League teams.
The Edmonton Oilers, in particular, had a busy day. Their day started slow, but the ball began to roll once they were able to trade Darnell Nurse. Moving out his entire $9.25 million cap hit, the Oilers replaced him with Ryan Shea, while also adding Frederik Andersen and Mathieu Joseph to one-year deals.
Around the league, there were 16 former Oilers who signed the dotted line on July 1st, including two players who re-signed with the Oilers.
Which former Oilers re-signed with the team on July 1?
Of the two, Kasperi Kapanen was the most noticeable. Signing to a one-year, $2.6 million cap hit, Kapanen missed half of the 2025-26 season due to injury, but was productive when healthy. In 41 games, the right winger scored eight goals and 17 points, up from his six goals and 14 points in 67 games last season. Kapanen also happened to be one of the best Oilers’ in the short playoff run, scoring four goals and six points in six games.
Max Jones missed the postseason due to an injury, splitting his 2025-26 season between the American Hockey League and the NHL. The Oilers were better with him in the lineup, hitting everything he saw. Over 21 NHL games, Jones scored three goals and five points, earning him a one-year deal with an $850,000 cap hit.
Where did Jack Roslovic and Calvin Pickard sign in free agency?
The biggest notable loss of last year’s roster is Jack Roslovic, who signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a two-year deal that carries a cap hit of $4 million. Signing early into the 2025-26 season, Roslovic scored 21 goals and 36 points in 69 games with the Oilers.
Also departing the Oilers was Calvin Pickard, who signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Minnesota Wild. Pickard was one of four goalies who played 15 or more games with the oilers last season, finishing the year with an .871 save percentage and a 3.68 goals-against average.
Another netminder who played 15+ games with the Oilers was Stuart Skinner. After being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in December, Skinner returns north of the border, joining the Winnipeg Jets on a two-year deal that carries a cap hit of $3.75 million annually. It’s a nice move for Skinner, who’ll either play second fiddle to Connor Hellebuyck or start in a quiet market.
Which Bakersfield Condors players signed contracts elsewhere?
A player the Oilers got in return for Skinner, Samuel Poulin, has departed the Oilers. Poulin signed with his hometown Montréal Canadiens on a one-year deal after scoring 12 goals and 29 points in 49 games with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.
Two of Poulin’s Condors teammates also signed elsewhere. Cam Dineen, acquired alongside Nick Bjugstad before the 2023 trade deadline, signed with the Philadelphia Flyers. The defenceman played 40 games with the Condors, scoring three goals and 21 points, down from nine goals and 43 points in 59 games during the 2024-25 season.
For the first time in his professional career, James Hamblin has left the Oilers organization, signing with the Anaheim Ducks. Last season with the Condors, he scored 27 goals and 41 points in 64 games, the second consecutive season he finished the season with 40 or more points. Hamblin played 31 games with the Oilers in 2023-24.
There were two notable players on the 2024-25 Oilers who signed on Canada Day. Corey Perry began the 2025-26 season with the Los Angeles Kings, and he returned to the team on a one-year deal. Last season, he scored 17 goals and 36 points in 72 games, playing 50 games with the Kings before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Viktor Arvidsson, who played just 67 regular season games with the Oilers in 2024-25, signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. After scoring just 15 goals and 27 points in those 67 games with the Oilers, the Swede bounced back in 2025-26, scoring 25 goals and 54 points in 69 games with the Boston Bruins.
Two Oilers of yesteryear also signed on Canada Day. Laurent Brossoit signed a one-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks after spending most of his 2025-26 season with the Sharks’ AHL team. Brossoit played 28 games with the Oilers over four seasons before becoming an NHL backup and winning a Stanley Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023.
Alex Petrovic signed a two-year deal with the Florida Panthers after scoring two goals and 10 points in 54 games with the Dallas Stars in 2025-26. If you don’t remember Petrovic’s time with the Oilers, that’s totally fair, as he played nine games with them in 2018-19 after Peter Chiarelli traded a third-rounder for his services. This past season was the first time he’s played double-digit regular games since 2018-19, but you can read more about that here.
There were three players who spent time in the Oilers organization prior to 2025-26 who signed on Canada Day. The Lightning signed netminder Olivier Rodrigue to a one-year deal after spending his season in the Chicago Blackhawks’ organization. Rodrigue was drafted 62nd overall by the Oilers in 2018, and played just two games with the team in 2024-25.
Raphaël Lavoie re-upped with the Golden Knights, agreeing to a one-year deal. The Chambly, Que., product was drafted 38th overall by the Oilers in the 2019 draft, playing seven games with them in 2023-24. There was some controversy about his waiver claim early in the 2024-25, but he’s gone on to play just 10 games for the Knights in the last two seasons. With their AHL team last season, Lavoie scored 30 goals and 56 points in just 45 games.
Lastly, Lane Pederson is the lone player on this list who never suited up for the Oilers. He signed a one-year deal with the Kings after spending the 2025-26 season in the Flyers organization. Most of that time was spent in the AHL, scoring 23 goals and 48 points in 63 games, but he did play five pointless NHL games as well. Pederson spent two seasons with the Condors in 2023-24 and 2024-25.
