Alex Ovechkin continues to venture into uncharted territory.
One of the biggest storylines of the 2024-25 season was whether Ovechkin would be able to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s 894 goals. Late in the year, he did just that. On Wednesday evening, Ovechkin became the first player in National Hockey League history to reach 900 goals.
Through 13 games this season, Ovechkin has three goals and eight points with the Washington Capitals. In the final season of his contract, a big question mark after the season is whether the 40-year-old will return for a 22nd season.
It’s been an incredible career for the nine-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner.
Corey Perry plays in his 1,400th game
Former Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry is one of a handful of players older than Alex Ovechkin. Like the Great Eight, Perry reached a milestone on Wednesday, reaching the 1,400-game mark, one of just four active players with that designation.
Perry was drafted in the first round of the 2003 by the then Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, one of just two players remaining from that draft. The bulk of Perry’s career was spent with the Ducks, playing 988 games over 14 seasons with the California-based team.
After departing the Ducks, Perry has sought to win his second Stanley Cup, playing for the Dallas Stars, Montréal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks, the Oilers, and now the Los Angeles Kings.
The 40-year-old is off to a strong start with the Kings, scoring five goals and eight points in eight games.
Nazem Kadri plays in his 1,000th game
There was another milestone reached by a player on Wednesday, as Nazem Kadri played in his 1,000th game, the 411th player in NHL history to reach the mark.
Kadri, 35, was selected seventh overall in the 2009 draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The first 10 seasons of his career were spent with the Original Six team, scoring 161 goals and 357 points in 561 games. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche before the 2019-20 season, amassing 178 games and winning a Stanley Cup with the team in 2022.
Since the 2022-23 season, Kadri has played with the Flames, scoring 92 goals and 209 points in 261 games.
Dallas Stars to host the 2027 Stadium Series
On Monday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the Dallas Stars will host an NHL Stadium Series game in 2027. The event will be held at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, home of the Cowboys.
The Stars last hosted an outdoor game on Jan. 1, 2020, as they welcomed the Nashville Predators at the Cotton Bowl Stadium for the 2020 Winter Classic. This will be the second outdoor game the Stars have participated in.
There are two outdoor games during the 2025-26 season. The Florida Panthers host the New York Rangers on Jan. 2 at LoanDepot Park in Miami. It will be the first outdoor game the reigning Stanley Cup champions participate, leaving just the Utah Mammoth without an outdoor game appearance.
The other game will come a month later, as the Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Boston Bruins on Feb. 1 for the annual Stadium Series.
