Daniel Sprong will be dawning another new NHL logo after the Vancouver Canucks signed the forward to a one-year deal on Saturday.
Ahead of last season, Sprong inked a one-year $2-million deal with the Red Wings, but his new contract with the Canucks will see him take a bit of a pay cut with a value of $975,000.
During the 2023-24 campaign, Sprong scored 18 goals and 43 points in 76 games with the Red Wings. However, the previous 2022-23 season saw the 27-year-old hit career highs in all offensive categories with the Seattle Kraken, recording 21 goals and 46 points in 66 games.
Sprong was the 46th overall selection by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Although the then 18-year-old played 18 games with the Penguins during the 2015-16 season, he spent the majority of his time with his Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League team, the Charlottetown Islanders.
After four seasons in the QMJHL, the forward recorded 117 goals and 261 points across 199 games, with an additional 24 goals and 51 points throughout 38 playoff games.
Sprong was eventually moved to play with the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins, for the 2017-18 season. With the AHL Penguins, he recorded 32 goals and 65 points throughout 65 regular-season games and a bonus of two goals and three points across eight games in Pittsburgh.
However, the following season wasn’t as promising for the young forward, and he was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks after 16 games with Pittsburgh. Since then, Sprong has bounced around the league playing for the Washington Capitals, Kraken, Red Wings, and now the Canucks recording  85 goals and 159 points in 344 NHL games.
The Canucks finished the 2023-24 campaign with a record of 50-23-9, leading the Pacific Division with 109 points and winning their first division title since the 2012-13 season. However, a Game 7 loss to the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs eliminated them from any further postseason action.

Red Wings sign Joe Veleno to two-year deal

On Friday, the Detroit Red Wings announced that the organization and forward Joe Veleno had agreed to terms on a two-year, $4.55 million deal, avoiding arbitration.
Sportsnet‘s Elliotte Friedman reported Friday afternoon that the Red Wings and Veleno had settled on a deal with an average annual value of $2.275 million.
During the 2023-24 campaign, Veleno recorded 12 goals and 28 points across 80 games with the Red Wings, which adds to his grand total of 30 goals and 64 points across 232 regular-season games throughout four seasons in the NHL.
The 24-year-old was originally selected 30th overall by the Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Draft. He jumped between the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins and Sweden’s top professional league before joining the Red Wings full-time in 2021-22.
Before the NHL, Veleno played four seasons in the Quebec Maritimes Hockey League with the Saint John Sea Dogs, winning the President’s Cup in 2017. Shortly after the start of the 2017-18 season, Veleno was traded to the Drummondville Voltigeurs, where he would record 16 goals and 48 points in 33 games, finishing the regular season with a total of 22 goals and 79 points across 64 games between both the Sea Dogs and Voltigeurs.
He continued with the Voltigeurs until the club was eliminated during the 2018-19 playoffs. From there, the Red Wings signed him to a three-year entry-level contract.
This past season, the Red Wings finished fifth in the Atlantic Division with a record of 41-32-9 and 91 points, missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs due to the Washington Capitals making the cut on a tie-breaker with a victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on the final day of the regular season.
