McDavid scores five points in late-season game against Sharks: Best Oilers moments of 2025-26

This summer, Oilersnation will recap the top five Edmonton Oilers goals, the top five fights, and the top five overall moments from the up-and-down 2025-26 season.

Connor McDavid registered three five-point games in 2025-26, the third season in his career he’s done it at least three times. There wasn’t a more impactful five-point game than his performance on April 8th.

Considering all the injuries the Oilers faced, where the Oilers stood in the standings, and where McDavid sat in the Art Ross race, his performance that night is the third-best moment from the Oilers’ 2025-26 season.

McDavid’s five-point night

Up to this point, McDavid already had two separate five-point nights. In the final game before the holiday break, the Oilers’ captain picked up five helpers in a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. A month later, his five-point night was outshined by Evan Bouchard’s six-point night, which you can read about here.

Entering this game, the Oilers were tied with the Vegas Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division, with the Anaheim Ducks hot on their trail. With four games remaining, the Oilers’ spot in the postseason was pretty secure, but there was still a lot to play for, both in terms of the standings and for McDavid himself.

McDavid was in the thick of the Art Ross race with Nikita Kucherov and Nathan MacKinnon. If he finished the season leading the league in points, he’d move into a three-way tie with Gordie Howe and Mario Lemieux for second-most Art Ross Trophies in a career.

It didn’t help that two key members of the Oilers’ power play, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, missed this game due to injuries. It didn’t matter.

Macklin Celebrini opened the scoring, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead four and a half minutes into the game. That lead lasted less than two minutes, as McDavid found the back of the net on the power play. Late in the first period, McDavid picked up his first assist of the game on Vasily Podkolzin’s 19th of the season, another power play goal.

The Oilers’ power play had been rough coming into this game, mainly because of no Draisaitl in the lineup. Well, three and a half minutes into the second, the Oilers scored their third power play goal of the game, as McDavid sprung Jack Roslovic for a breakaway, leading to his 21st of the season.

Just over a minute later, the Sharks got to within one, but McDavid showed why he’s the best player to ever live. Six minutes into the second, McDavid took a wide angle, raced by the Sharks’ defence, then avoided a pokecheck and deposited it into the back of the net.

Before the end of the second period, McDavid completed the hat trick, getting a fortuitous deflection on a pass he made on a two-on-one. That capped off a terrific five-point night in what was a 5-2 win.

Not only that, but this game was enough for the captain to win the Art Ross. Coming into it, he had 44 goals and 128 points, moving to 48 goals and 133 points. Kucherov, who finished second for the trophy, finished with only 131 points. In the end, McDavid finished with 48 goals and 138 points, capturing his sixth Art Ross.
