A former Edmonton Oiler won an award on Saturday.
It was announced by the NHL Alumni Association on Saturday morning that Oilers legend Jari Kurri won the second-annual Börje Salming Courage Award.
The award is given to a European Alumni member “who has been a positive influence in their community and best embodies Börje’s lasting legacy of bravery, courage, and dedication both on and off the ice.”
Salming passed away nearly two years ago due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a terrible disease. His legacy lives on though, as he was one of the first impact European players to make the National Hockey League back in the 1970s.
Kurri joined the Oilers in the 1980s, winning five cups with the dynasty while scoring 474 goals and 1,043 points in 754 games in 10 seasons. He eventually landed with the Los Angeles Kings (along with Jeff Chychrun, his son is mentioned in this article), where Kurri spent five seasons.
Afterward, Kurri played with the New York Rangers, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and Colorado Avalanche before hanging up the skates after the 1997-98 season.

Jakob Chychrun placed on Injured Reserve

On Saturday morning, the Washington Capitals placed defenceman Jakob Chychrun on Injured Reserve due to an upper-body injury.
As of yet, the cause is yet to be known and there’s no timetable for his return. The Capitals acquired the left-shot defenceman from the Ottawa Senators in the off-season after he scored 14 goals and 41 points, the latter tying his career-high. So far in 2024-25, Chychrun has two goals and four points in eight games.
After making the Stanley Cup playoffs on the final day of the 2023-24 season, the Capitals are off to a roaring start to begin 2024-25, winning seven of their first nine games. Their .778 point percentage is tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for third in the league, behind the Winnipeg Jets (.909) and Minnesota Wild (.800).

Islanders will be without a couple of key players for a few weeks

On Saturday morning, the New York Islanders announced that Mathew Barzal and Adam Pelech will both be out for 4-6 weeks.
Barzal hit the long-term Injured Reserve, while defenceman Adam Pelech hit the injured reserve, both players are out due to upper-body injuries. In fact, Mike Reilly and Alex Romanov are day-to-day thanks to upper-body injuries.
So far through 10 games, Barzal has two goals and five points, tied for sixth in points and tied for fifth in goals. The forward is coming off one of his best seasons, scoring a career-high 23 goals in 80 games last season, along with 80 points.
As for Pelech, the left-shot defenceman has four assists through 11 games but managed to score a goal and 16 points in 58 games last season. Pelech scored a career-high six goals in 2022-23 and picked up 28 points during the 2021-22 season.
This is a big blow for the Islanders, who have had trouble scoring this season. Through 11 games, their 26 goals are the third-fewest in the league, only behind the Anaheim Ducks and the Nashville Predators. Their 10 points are third-worst in the Metropolitan Divison.
