NHL trade rumours: Oilers are still ‘sniffing’ around goalie market

The Edmonton Oilers could be exploring a goalie trade.
Sportsnet’s Mark Spector said during a TV segment on Wednesday morning that the Oilers are “sniffing” around the goalie market.
“You could say that Stan Bowman has completed his tasks here,” said Spector. “He needed a third-line centre, they brought in Jason Dickinson. They needed a right-side defenceman, they brought in Connor Murphy. They brought in Colton Dach, a young guy who can help down the road probably. But there are others who would say the work is never done in Edmonton until you acquire or fix your goaltending situation.”
“He brought in Tristan Jarry. That’s been not great this year. I’m kinda thinking that a guy who has his work done amongst his skaters is sniffing around the goaltending market today.”
Bowman said during a media conference on Thursday that it was unlikely he would make any more deals, but if a trade were going to happen, it would not be a significant one. The Oilers have already made two goalie trades this year, acquiring Connor Ingram in October and Tristan Jarry in December.
Kevin Weekes tweeted on Friday morning and listed a variety of goaltenders who are being discussed in potential trade scenarios. To the surprise of some, Oilers netminder Connor Ingram was on the list.
That list also included Sergei Bobrovsky, Jesper Wallstedt, Jordan Binnington, Anthony Stolarz, and former Oiler Stuart Skinner.
“I think Kevin Woodley from InGoal Magazine, whose word I trust, will tell you the Oilers defensive environment is the worst in the league and has been for a while,” said Spector. “So it’s hard to judge your goalies when they are playing behind a team that’s not playing very good defensive hockey. Let’s face it.
“I can lay down all those numbers for you, and you can say — whatever Spec. This team needs a goalie. I think we’d all agree that the goaltending here has been underwhelming. If you’re going to win a Cup, you need a top-flight tender. I don’t think the Oilers have one.”
Tristan Jarry has two years of contract term left on his current deal, valued at $5.375 million. After a 9-3-1 record with the Pittsburgh Penguins with an .909 save percentage, his numbers have plummeted since becoming an Oiler.
Jarry has a 6-4-1 record in Edmonton, with a 3.85 goals-against average and an .863 save percentage.
Ingram has posted an 8-6-1 record in 17 games this year, with an .890 save percentage, a 2.83 goals-against average and a 60 per cent quality start percentage.
