According to the Oilers’ Twitter account, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. The annual award is issued to the NHL player who “best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice in addition to making humanitarian contributions to his community.” Nugent-Hopkins gets the nod for the Oilers for his work with the Cystic Fibrosis Canada as well as Hockey Helps Kids.

The King Clancy Memorial Trophy is named in honour of former Ottawa Senator, Francis “King” Clancy, who not only played in the NHL but also went on to coach, ref, and even become an executive. As mentioned, the award goes out to a player that is just as good in their community as they are on the ice and is selected by chosen by a panel of representatives from the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association and the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.

An Oiler has won the award three times in its history, with the last being given to Andrew Ference in 2013-14 after becoming involved with many local charities as well as the November Project which is geared at increase physical activity in one’s everyday life. The other two Oilers to win the award were Kevin Lowe in 1989-90 and Ethan Moreau in 2008-09.
