The Edmonton Oilers have swung a big deal Tuesday morning, flipping a pair of prospects and draft picks in part of a three-way trade that will see them acquire forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones from the Boston Bruins.
The Oilers will part with a litany of pieces, including prospects Shane Lachance, who heads to the New Jersey Devils who retained 50 percent of Frederic’s contract, as well as Max Wanner, a 2025 2nd round pick (St. Louis) and the Oilers’ own 4th round pick in 2026, the team announced. The Oilers also acquire unsigned prospect Petr Hauser from the Devils in the deal.

Frederic, 27, stands at 6’3, 221 lbs and has appeared in 57 games this year for the Bruins, scoring eight goals and 15 points. He’s a pending unrestricted free agent in the second year of a two-year deal paying him $2.3-million. However, with the Bruins retaining 50 percent and the Devils another 50 percent, but with half that salary retained, he will only cost $575,000 against the cap for the remainder of the season.
He is currently week-to-week with a lower-body injury suffered on Feb. 25 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
A physical winger whose 12.8 hits per hour at five-on-five are far and away more than any other Oilers forward, top end speed isn’t a strong suit for Frederic, but he does have speed bursts ranking in the 60th percentile. He’s driven play offensively at a six percent rate above league average and defence at a two percent rate below league, according to HockeyViz, who pegs his impacts at that of a second-line forward.
The Bruins have had poor on-ice results this year with Frederic on the ice, controlling 47.9 percent of the shot attempt share, 50.2 percent of the scoring chance share and 50.3 percent of the expected goal share, but just 40.4 percent of the actual goal share, outscored 28-19. Part of the issue sinking Frederic’s results is a low on-ice shooting percentage of just 6.4 percent.
Still, Frederic’s been a strong finisher and has produced 1.77 points per hour at five-on-five over the last three seasons, production that borders on top-six numbers.
Jones, also 27, stands at 6’3, 216 lbs. and is in the first year of a two-year deal paying him $1-million. He’s spent the majority of this season with Bruins’ AHL affiliate Providence Bruins, scoring 13 goals and 21 points in 38 games. He has drawn in for seven NHL games, but didn’t register a point.
Hauser, 21, was drafted by the Devils in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, and has spent the past two years in Czechia playing in their various leagues. Last year he played 11 games in the Czechia u20 league, scoring 11 goals and 25 points, while splitting some time between the Czechia and Czechia2 league, like he has this year. In 30 games in Czechia2, he’s scored 10 goals and 18 points in 30 games, but just one goal and 11 points in 55 games in Czechia, their top league.
The Oilers will part with a pair of recently drafted players in the deals.
Wanner, 21, drafted in the seventh round of the 2021 draft, had a strong rookie pro season in 2023-24, appearing in 68 AHL games with the Bakersfield Condors, scoring seven goal and 17 points, but has seen a dip this year, with one goal and two points in 22 games.
Lachance, also 21, was drafted by the Oilers in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, and has spent his last two seasons with the NCAA’s Boston University. He scored 13 goals and 27 points in 40 games last year, adding another 10 goals and 25 points in 32 games this season.
