The injury bug is biting the Edmonton Oilers.
The team has been without Viktor Arvidsson for the last four games, and now, it appears he will miss the next two, as well. Zach Hyman was banged up in Tuesday’s game against the Ottawa Senators, although there had been some signs he ailed for a few games before, as he was seen talking to the trainers on the Oilers bench.
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said Thursday that Hyman is expected to miss the next four-to-seven days, while Arvidsson isn’t expected back Saturday against the New York Rangers, either. Defenceman Darnell Nurse, meanwhile, might be an option to play in that game after missing the last two.
The Oilers recalled Drake Caggiula from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, while having claimed winger Kasperi Kapanen two days prior. Both are expected to play in the Oilers lineup Thursday as they host the Minnesota Wild.
As much as the Oilers could use the trio above back from their injuries as soon as possible, Edmonton’s schedule dictates that they miss the next two games as a good thing, with the team having multiple days off next week. In fact, after Saturday night’s game against the Rangers, the team doesn’t play again until the following Friday, meaning there are five days without games for the team.
That would offer ample time for them to continue to recover from what ails them. The Toronto Maple Leafs are likely taking a similar approach with superstar Auston Matthews, who visited a doctor in Germany for treatment for an upper-body injury. After their game against the Oilers last Saturday, they had three days without games before facing the Vegas Golden Knights Wednesday night, winning 3-0. They’re off for another three before hosting the Utah Hockey Club on Sunday night.
