The Edmonton Oilers have made a roster move Tuesday morning, loaning Drake Caggiula to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.
Caggiula, 30, was called up by the team last week in the wake of Connor McDavid’s injury, which he is nearing a return from. Caggiula drew in for two games for the Oilers in his call up, notching an assist early in his first game, while taking two shots on goal in the pair of games.
The veteran winger, who signed with the Oilers as a college free agent to start his pro career ahead of the 2016-17 season, had spent three years with the team right away, before a trade sent him to the Chicago Blackhawks. Caggiula bounced around between the Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres and most recently, the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, before signing in Edmonton this past summer.
His deal was a two-year, two-way contract worth $775,000, and prior to his call up, he had put up two goals and five points in five games with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.
A solid vet for the organization, he’s somebody who — as we saw this week — come up to the NHL team and provide some solid fourth-line minutes, while being a driver for the Condors. Bakersfield is dealing with some injuries, with forwards James Hamblin and Lane Pederson both out with injuries.
The Condors moved to sign forward Brayden Tracey to a professional tryout Tuesday to help alleviate some of that, given Noah Philp remains with the Oilers. Tracey, 23, was selected by the Anaheim Ducks 29th overall in the 2019 draft, spending the three seasons with their AHL affiliate San Diego Gulls where he racked up 30 goals and 84 points in 172imagn games.
Tracey was a restricted free agent last summer, and the Ducks didn’t give him a qualifying offer. As highlighted by The Hockey News, he played for four different head coaches.
