I'm told defenceman Beau Akey, selected 56th overall by the @EdmontonOilers in the 2023 Entry Draft and playing with the Barrie Colts, is done for the balance of this season after having surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder.

Well, this isn’t news you want to hear.
Our very own Robin Brownlee reported that Beau Akey, the Edmonton Oilers’ second-round pick in the 2023 draft, underwent shoulder surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder.
The 18-year-old right-shot defenceman most recently played on November 10, picking up a goal on two shots in a 3-1 Barrie Colts win over the Mississauga Steelheads. For the season, he has four goals and nine points in 14 games.
In his pre-draft season in 2022-23, Akey scored 11 goals and 47 points in 66 games while picking up 39 penalty minutes. In that season’s playoffs, he scored two goals and five points in 13 games as Barrie made it to Game Seven of the Conference Semifinals. The Oilers selected him with their first pick in the 2023 draft at No. 53 overall.
It’s to be seen if the Barrie Colts will make the playoffs. Currently, they are 9-9 in 18 games, which puts them seventh in the Eastern Conference and tied on points with the Brantford Bulldogs. The Ontario Hockey League is competitive, and Oshawa only sits a point out of a playoff spot. If Barrie does make the playoffs, it’s unknown whether or not Akey will be healthy enough to return.
Akey is a smooth skater with the confidence to carry the puck up the ice and look for the killer pass. He impressed in the Penticton Young Stars Tournament, picking up a goal in the first game and looking like one of the best players on the ice in two of the three games. He’s a power-play quarterback and isn’t too shabby defensively, either.
We here at Oilersnation wish nothing but the best in Akey’s recovery, as he has a real chance of making an impact in the National Hockey League in three to five seasons from now.
