Oilers reassign Ryan Cameron, release three tryouts in first camp cuts

The Edmonton Oilers have made their first wave of cuts at their training camp.

Following Monday evening’s NextGen game against the Calgary Flames, four players were cut from their training camp. Ryan Cameron, a netminder whom the Oilers drafted in the 2026 NHL Draft, was sent back to his United States Hockey League team. Moreover, Weston Cameron, Olli Wahlroos, and Kyle Heger were all released from their amateur tryouts.

Ryan Cameron didn’t participate in the NextGen games, as Nathaniel Day, Eemil Vinni, and Samuel Jonsson played a period each. There will be more opportunities for the 19-year-old netminder in the coming years, but for now, he’ll return to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Last season, he posted an .882 save percentage and 2.92 goals-against average over 40 games, owning a 24-11-5 record. That led to the Oilers using their seventh-round pick to select the six-foot-two, 183-pound netminder from Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Cameron is committed to Boston College and will begin his collegiate career in 2027-28.

As for the other three players, both W. Cameron and Heger had their imprints in the NextGen game. Weston Cameron dropped the gloves with Flames’ defence prospect Mace’o Phillips, handily losing the fight against a tough customer.

Heger scored late in the game, the sixth Oilers’ goal in what turned out to be a 6-1 victory for the good guys. Wahlroos served as the 13th forward and was not noticeable during the NextGen game.

Wahlroos, 18, played in Finland’s junior ranks last season and is set to make his North American debut in 2026-27, playing with the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings. Heger will return to the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes after scoring 11 goals and 35 points in 59 games split between the Medicine Hat Tigers and Hurricanes in 2025-26. He’s committed to playing for Western Michigan in 2027-28.

W. Cameron will also play in the Canadian Hockey League next season, as he’s set to return for the reigning Memorial Cup Champions, the Ontario Hockey League’s Kitchener Rangers. Last season, he scored six goals and 44 points, but only played one postseason game. He’ll attend Massachusetts in 2027-28.

Pre-season officially kicks off on Saturday, as the Oilers are set to host the Winnipeg Jets at 6:00 PM MT.
