The Edmonton Oilers have announced the signings of forwards Grayson Downing and Brian Ferlin.
25-year old Downing, a center, played in 59 games last year with the AHL’s Iowa Wild and Tucson Roadrunners. He scored 26 points in those games.
Downing has played in 120 career AHL games, where he has scored 28 goals and 42 assists for 70 points.
He was undrafted after playing in the NCAA for the University of New Hampshire where he accumulated 112 points in 144 games.
Ferlin, a right-shot, right-winger who is also 25 years old, has played in 78 games over the last three years for the Providence Bruins. In those games, he has accumulated 34 points.
He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL entry draft by Peter Chiarelli.
Hockey’s Future on Downing:
Downing is a decently-built, late blooming offensively oriented forward who added bulk and strength during his college career at New Hampshire. He has a hard, accurate shot and is more of a sniper than a playmaking forward. There isn’t a great deal of flash and he will likely have to develop the supplementary aspects of his game to have a chance of playing at the NHL level one day. He plays with a feistiness to his game though that recklessness has sometimes led to missed time due to injury during his junior and college careers.
Hockey’s Future on Ferlin:
Ferlin has an impressive combination of size and skill. Despite growing up in a non-traditional hockey area, he has developed into a prospect through hard work and determination. While no one area of his game stick out, his physical development, technical skills, and understanding of tactical play are all pluses.
