We know four of those names in Ty Rattie, Mitch Callahan, Keegan Lowe and Eddie Pasquale. Now, Sportsnet’s Mark Spector says that number five is St. Albertan D Ryan Stanton.

The deal is a two-year, two-way contract that will pay him $700k in the NHL and $300k in the AHL.

Stanton was undrafted and has bounced between the Canucks, Blackhawks and Capitals organizations. The highlight coming when he got to lift the Stanley Cup after playing a small part for the 2013 Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks. He has played in 332 AHL games scoring 88 points and has played in 120 NHL games scoring 27 points.

The 6’2, 196 lb left-shot defenceman grew up playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors.

It sounds to me like Stanton will fill the role left by losing Jordan Oesterle and may be able to fight for a bottom pairing or number seven role in the NHL. Stanton’s 120 NHL games allow us to take a look at some of his analytics which shows that he is not a liability on the ice.

At 5v5 over his career, Stanton has played 1653:17 TOI and scored .91 points per hour. In that time, he has posted a 53.5 GF% and a 49.2 CF%.

Based on numbers alone, he compares very well to the defensive players the Oilers have and will certainly fight with Eric Gryba for NHL ice time.
