It’s the most wonderful time of the year — hockey season.
Last night we watched the Pittsburgh Penguins upset the Tampa Bay Lightning on their banner raising night and saw the Seattle Kraken’s inaugural game where they almost mounted a comeback.
Tonight, we get to watch the Edmonton Oilers open its season against the Vancouver Canucks.
But last night, OilersNation social media wiz Woz hit an NHL22 stream on Twitch where he simmed the entire NHL season. What did it show? Well… not much Oilers fans would like. You can watch the full hour long sim here).
The team finished the year with an impressive 50-28-4 record and 104 points — good enough to clinch not only the Pacific Division but the entire Western Conference. They scored at a solid clip of 2.84 goals for per game, while allowing 2.5.
Come the playoffs, however, the Oilers didn’t fare so well. They met the Dallas Stars in the first round and lost in heartbreaking fashion in game seven.
As for the hardware, well, there wasn’t much to go around.
Connor McDavid led the Oilers in scoring with a 33-50—83 line, but only played in 70 games. Leon Draisaitl was close behind with 38-42—80.
The star of the show? Tyson Barrie. He mounted an incredible season scoring 9-63—72 and taking home the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman. He was an even-strength scoring machine with 58 of his points coming there.
In net, Mike Smith played a whopping 73 games posting a 43-25-4 record, a .917 save percentage and a 2.50 GAA. Not bad if I say so myself.
As for the cup champs, that went to none other than the Toronto Maple Leafs. They swept the Philadelphia Flyers in round one and beat New Jersey 4-1 in round two before knocking off the Montreal Canadiens in seven games.
In the finals, they met the Chicago Blackhawks and beat them pretty easily in seven games.
At the end of the actual 2021-22 campaign, we’ll take a look back and see just how accurate Woz’s sim was.
