The Day After -5.0: Roster hopefuls and new additions shine as Oilers hammer Jets

While it’s best not to draw many conclusions from pre-season games, it’s safe to say some of the players on the Oilers felt extra motivated when the Winnipeg Jets visited town on Friday night.
Not long before the game, the Oilers trimmed their pre-season roster by 14, sending 13 players to AHL Bakersfield and one to the waiver wire. None of the cuts were surprising, but they offered a reminder to the bubble players left in Edmonton that there’s only so much time to make an impression.
The squad the Oilers sent out against the Jets featured a blend of veterans and roster hopefuls, but no stars. The defence was led by Darnell Nurse and Brett Kulak, who both logged just over 22 minutes. Calvin Pickard got the start and turned aside all 21 shots that he faced.
With no Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, or Evan Bouchard in the lineup, the pressure was on depth players to step up and create offence. All four of Edmonton’s forward lines were in the mix, with the team’s four goals coming from four different players.
Nurse opened the scoring in the first period with a quick shot from inside the point following an excellent zone entry by Viljami Marjala, Josh Samanski, and Roby Järventie. Samanski found the back of the net later in the first frame after a nice interception deep in the offensive zone by David Tomášek. Noah Philp gave the Oilers a 3-0 lead in the second frame, and Kasperi Kapanen added another goal in the third frame to make the score 4-0.
Quite a few names stood out positively for Edmonton in their commanding pre-season victory over a Winnipeg team with little jump. The Oilers mostly looked like a team full of players who didn’t want to be part of the next group headed to Bakersfield.
What they said…
Head coach Kris Knobluach on what the Oilers did in their win over the Jets…
“We were playing at a high pace and we were skating. We were checking well and we were on the attack. Obviously, there were some breakdowns, but Picks was solid and has had a great preseason so far. But overall, I was happy with the way the guys played.”
Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel on how the Jets played in Edmonton…
“We had some veterans, a couple of guys that hadn’t played games yet. And there was some rust. More of our veteran guys made some mistakes that they don’t usually do. So, it’s just everybody kind of getting them, getting the rust off of from the summer, young guys still trying to show that they deserve another game.”
Forward Noah Philp on his offensive production in the pre-season…
“Last year, I definitely struggled offensively a little bit in the time that I was here, and it’s always nice when you can (score goals). But for me, it’s definitely a defensive focus, and that usually leads to offence if you’re doing that well. Right now, I’m feeling pretty confident with playmaking, just trying to create a little bit on the offensive side as well. But all over, I’m trying to make solid plays and be strong on the puck.”
Forward Josh Samanski on adjusting to the North American style of play…
“It takes a little bit at first, I’m used to the bigger ice and maybe a little bit more time, but it’s been a lot of fun, especially skating with NHL players and getting used to their pace, how they play and carry themselves on and off the ice. It’s been very helpful for me, and I think I’ve adjusted pretty well up until this point. I’m trying to keep getting better at every single thing.”
Up next…
The Oilers will host the Canucks on Sunday at 6:00 PM MT for their final home pre-season game. After that, they’ll hit the road next week for a couple more tune-up games in Seattle and Vancouver on Wednesday and Friday. Edmonton will begin the regular season at home against the Flames on Wednesday, October 8.
