This is the Edmonton Oilers team that went to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals.
On the second night of a back-to-back following a 6-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks, the Oilers defeated the St. Louis Blues by a score of 5-0 on Sunday. There was a whole lot that happened in this game, so let’s take a look at what happened!
Before the game, the Oilers celebrated Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for reaching 1,000 games. It seems fitting that the longest tenured Oiler opened the scoring six minutes into the game. He received the puck in the slot, was given far too much time, and sniped it past Jordan Binnington to make it 1-0.
The fourth line got on the board with about eight minutes left in the opening frame. Curtis Lazar worked hard down low, fired a low shot, and Andrew Mangiapane banged in the rebound for just his second goal since November 3rd.

With just under a minute and a half remaining in the first period, the Oilers made it a 3-0 game. Mattias Ekholm’s shot from the point was deflected in tight by Zach Hyman to continue his torrid pace since returning from injury.

Hyman usually scores from in tight, but midway through the middle frame, his second goal of the night came on a one-timer. Connor McDavid had a nice little spin at the blue line, got the puck to Hyman in the faceoff dot, and the winger went post and in for his 19th of the season.
They didn’t need a fifth goal, but they got one anyway early in the first period. McDavid got the zone entry, lost his balance, but recovered enough to thread the needle to Vasily Podkolzin. The Russian scored his second goal in as many games.
Takeaways…
Before we start the takeaways, it’s important to remember that hockey is just a game. Eight minutes into the third period, Connor McDavid and Oskar Sundqvist got tangled up at the Oilers blue line. It looked innocuous at first, but once his skate blade was on the ice, it was evident something was wrong, as he was rushed off the ice. Wishing nothing but the best for the Blues player.
Games like this can be tough to watch, because earlier in the game, Kasperi Kapanen left the game with an injury. He caught a rut and crashed into the boards. Down for a bit, he got off under his own power, but didn’t return. Kapanen missed 36 games this season, hopefully it looks worse than it actually was.
Now on to the hockey stuff. Before the start of the game, the team, the fans, and the city celebrated Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ 1,000th career game. He is the first Oilers to exclusively play 1,000 games with the historic franchise. He also joins Adam Henrique as the two Oilers to play their 1,000th game as an Oilers.
For the second consecutive game, the Oilers pitched a shutout, as Connor Ingram stopped all 27 shots he faced on 2.44 expected goals. Of the nine games Ingram has played this season, eight have seen the netminder post a save percentage of .900 or above. He now has a .917 save percentage this season.
Zach Hyman scored twice and picked up an assist in this one. In his last 20 games, Hyman has 17 goals and 25 points. Vasily Podkolzin also scored his second goal in as many games, while McDavid picked up two assists.
Andrew Mangiapane scored just his second goal since November 3rd. It was a much better game for the fourth line in this one, and Curtis Lazar needs to stay in the lineup for the rest of the season. Their bottom six is completely different with him in the lineup.
It was another tough night for the third line of Ike Howard, Jack Roslovic, and Matt Savoie during five-on-five action, at least under-the-hood. They only had 31.1 percent of the expected goals and were out-shot 2-4. There were a whole lot of different lines because of the Kapanen injury.
Three defencemen picked up at least one point on Sunday, as Evan Bouchard and Jake Walman had an assist, while Mattias Ekholm had two assists. Both Bouchard and Ekholm were a +3.
Next up for the Oilers is a matchup against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday at 8:00 PM MT. It’s the second game of their eight-game home stand.
